Anupama Wells, LMSW

Psychotherapist
NY
I support adults who are navigating anxiety, chronic stress, burnout, grief, life transitions, identity-related stress, relationship patterns, neurodivergence, and the lasting impact of trauma. My approach is warm, calm, compassionate, and rooted in the belief that therapy should feel like a safe place to slow down and reconnect with yourself. I draw from mindfulness, somatic therapy, and Internal Family Systems-informed therapy, also known as IFS, to help clients better understand their emotions, nervous system responses, and inner patterns. In our work together, we may explore the different parts of you that feel protective, overwhelmed, self-critical, avoidant, grieving, or afraid. Rather than judging these parts or trying to push them away, we will work toward understanding them with curiosity and care. My goal is to help you feel more grounded, present, and connected to yourself as you move through life’s challenges with greater clarity and self-compassion.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Before you can schedule your first session, you will be offered a free 15 minute consultation to make sure I can provide you with the kind of therapy you are seeking. Clients can expect a therapy space that is steady, compassionate, and nonjudgmental. I am not a highly homework-based therapist, and I do not believe therapy needs to feel like another responsibility on your to-do list. While we may occasionally identify grounding practices, reflections, or tools that feel helpful between sessions, our work will be guided by what feels realistic, supportive, and meaningful for you. My style is present-focused and collaborative. We will pay attention to what is happening in your current life, while also making room to understand the deeper patterns, experiences, and parts of you that may be shaping how you cope, connect, protect yourself, or move through stress. I often work well with adults who are seeking a slower, more mindful approach to therapy and who want to build insight, emotional awareness, self-trust, and a stronger connection to their body and inner world.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first sessions, we will take time to understand what brings you to therapy, what you have been carrying, and what you hope may feel different over time. I will ask about your current stressors, relationships, identity, coping strategies, emotional patterns, and how stress or trauma may show up in your body. From there, we will move at a thoughtful pace. A typical session may include checking in with what feels most present, noticing emotions and body cues, exploring protective patterns, and making space for the parts of you that may feel overwhelmed, guarded, disconnected, or unsure. I often integrate mindfulness, somatic awareness, and IFS-informed parts work to support clients in building more compassion, choice, and inner steadiness. The work is collaborative, gentle, and grounded in the present moment. We will not rush toward quick fixes or force insight before you are ready. Instead, therapy can become a place where you feel supported in understanding yourself more deeply and responding to life with more calm, clarity, and care.
