“April is thoughtful, empathetic, insightful, and — quite simply — a really great therapist. I have gone from being extremely skeptical about therapy to having a hard time imagining where I would be without it. Much of that I would credit to April’s style, where she has brought genuine curiosity into each session and, over time, has built a space where I feel safe to examine the most difficult areas of my life. Therapy isn’t easy. But having a talented therapist has made all the difference for someone in my situation, and I would highly recommend April’s practice to anyone.”

“I have been seeing April since 2018 she has changed everything. With her help, I am experiencing the most prolonged period of mental health of my life. Something I once thought impossible. April is one of the most gentle and compassionate people I have ever met. She is not afraid to push me to see things in new, empowering or more honest ways. In our sessions, I have learned that suffering is inevitable but does not have to define my life. The emotionally safety I've gained through our years together allows me to be a braver person. A person who is not afraid of anything I can feel when it is all part of the joy of being alive. April's kindness is unmatched which makes sharing my fears, my pain, my dreams, less scary. There aren't enough words to describe what her work has meant to me. So I guess I will say this. I am happy. Truly. For the first time in my life. And I couldn't have done it without her. ”

Getting to know April Rohr

I work with high-achieving professionals in New York City — lawyers, finance professionals, and tech executives — who are used to performing at a high level but privately struggle with anxiety, emotional disconnection, alcohol use, or a persistent sense that something is missing. My approach is psychoanalytic and depth-oriented. Rather than focusing on symptom management or coping skills, I'm interested in understanding what's actually driving the patterns you keep running into — in your work, your relationships, and your relationship with yourself. Sessions are unhurried, exploratory, and collaborative. I hold a Master's in Social Work from Hunter College (CUNY) and have completed advanced psychoanalytic training, including postgraduate coursework at the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies in psychoanalytic approaches to alcohol and substance use, avoidant attachment, and high-functioning emotional detachment. I see clients in person in Brooklyn Heights and virtually throughout New York State.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My work tends to attract people who are skeptical of therapy — or who've tried it before and found it too surface-level. If you're used to being self-sufficient, keeping things close to the chest, or solving your way out of problems, you may find that a more exploratory, depth-oriented approach feels different from what you've encountered before. Sessions are not structured or agenda-driven. We follow what's alive in the room. Over time, patterns emerge and things that felt opaque begin to make sense. I see clients in person in Brooklyn Heights and virtually throughout New York State.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We typically start with a consultation call to see if we're a good fit, followed by an initial session where we talk about what's brought you in and what you're hoping to get from therapy. From there, sessions are weekly (or more frequent for psychoanalytic work). There's no fixed structure or homework — my approach is conversational and exploratory. I listen closely for what's beneath the surface: the patterns, the contradictions, the things you circle back to without quite knowing why. Over time, those things come into focus. I work with adults in person at my office in Brooklyn Heights and virtually throughout New York State.

I regularly meet with April and she's phenomenal at asking questions and getting you to think about things at a deeper level.

April is a great therapist. She helped me immensely with processing life in the big city, my anxiety and depression and the complexities of being a woman in the modern world with stresses from things like social pressures, dating, social media and a complex professional life. Depending on my needs visits would be weekly or bi-weekly. I saw her for over four years and only had to stop our appointments because I moved countries :(
I have met with April for several months virtually and she has been extremely helpful in helping me manage and navigate some of the toughest few months of my life. She is insightful, thoughtful, asks probing questions, and provides feedback to really help you take a step back and begin to understand where your feelings are rooted. Unlike other therapists I have tried in the past, April does not jump to conclusions or force conversations certain ways, which makes it very comfortable to talk about anything currently on my mind. Unfortunately, my job/insurance situation has recently changed, so I am taking a hiatus from meeting with April, but I hope to meet with her again in the future and would HIGHLY recommend anyone looking for support with their mental health to consider working with her.
April is incredibly thoughtful, receptive, and caring! She creates a safe space and is very accommodating with scheduling as well! So helpful and dedicated.
Visiting April is always a highlight of my week. She is disarming and thoughtful in her approach to conversation. During each session, I find that her insights and questions alike promote clarity where there is none. I would wholeheartedly recommend April to anyone considering a session.
April was very attentive and compassionate in therapy, always willing to listen to what I was feeling. The environment is always welcoming and I have been now seeing her for more than a year.
