Getting to know Austin Dowling

Is stress, anxiety, or depression keeping you up at night? Do you find yourself trapped in a loop or feeling unmoored? I am passionate about helping adults become unstuck and enhance self-esteem and intimacy by discovering their own direction, purpose, and fulfillment in life. Sometimes the anxiety or depression we face is a symptom of disconnection from our deeper selves. The good news is your symptoms are not a life sentence. My goal in therapy is to empower you to find your authentic voice and free yourself from patterns that no longer serve you well. I hold a Master's in Education from City University of New York, Hunter College, and earned my Bachelor's degrees from Trinity College and the University of Sydney. Areas of focus include: - Life transitions and changes, including relationships and fulfillment issues - Anxiety, depression, and processing trauma - Exploring questions around meaning, purpose, and motivation - Spiritual exploration of the meaning of our lives, why we are here, and what gives lasting satisfaction

What should a new client know about working with you?

Through an honest and engaged approach, I support clients to become unstuck, find their path to fulfillment, and embrace their unique strengths for greater happiness, intimacy, and fulfillment. I started my career as a litigation attorney in Ireland where I grew up. I spent many years working in law and professional services in the US, Australia, and China. Most recently, I worked as a therapist for a community activist organization. I was drawn to therapy from my prior career having seen firsthand the enormous value it can bring in improving both the quality and enjoyment of our lives. Therapy offers us a safe space to explore the parts of ourselves we cannot access in the midst of our daily routines. When we get right down to it, the quality of the relationships we have with others flows from the relationship we have with ourselves.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach includes Relational Psychoanalysis, which means that I help clients to identify what is behind patterns of thought and behavior, for example how they show up in relationships or why similar patterns repeat in our lives. I also apply Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which focuses on developing the skills to mindfully experience and manage our feelings, and Cognitive Behavior Therapy which focuses on thought patterns in our daily lives. When working with clients who are exploring purpose and meaning, I use Existential Therapy to explore humanistic and spiritual questions like why we are here, what is the meaning of our lives, and is there a Higher Power or Greater Consciousness out there.

Went in person in midtown. Good experience - he's alert and challenging. I didn't get a sense that he jumps to conclusions or oversimplifies things.
Austin is an excellent therapist! He's very caring and has sympathy and empathy towards his patients. I found him warm, welcoming, and very easy to talk to.
Austin is a joy to work with and he's so warm and easy to talk to that it sets the stage for therapy to organically take place. Austin is a very experienced professional who has a background in a few different modalities which allows for treatment to be tailored to the client.
