Avital holds a Bachelor of Arts honors degree in Cinema Studies from Oberlin College and a Master of Social Work honors degree from Hunter College's Silberman School of Social Work. As part of her graduate coursework, Avital specifically pursued clinical work with incarcerated people and sex workers, populations that the mental health field traditionally underserves. Avital arrived at social work after years as a sex educator, where she taught workshops and led trainings on gender, kink, sex-positivity, and boundaries for medical schools and universities. This work illuminated the need for spaces that are free of stigma and shame, particularly for marginalized populations. Avital practices therapy from a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and social constructivist lens. Her therapeutic approach is integrated, and can incorporate narrative therapy, CBT, and arts therapies alongside her psychodynamic orientation, depending on a client's interests and strengths. She believes that all people deserve collaborative, culturally competent care, and strives to create a warm and non-judgmental environment where people can come as they are.
