“I used to think ‘trauma’ was something that happened to other people. But there were things in my past that I just never dealt with, and they were still running the show. EMDR with Benjamin helped in ways I can't really explain. It's really powerful and I'm so grateful for the work we did. ”

Getting to know Benjamin Goldman

I'm Benjamin Goldman, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York (LMHC #013202). I work with individuals and couples, in person in the West Village and virtually. I didn't set out to be a therapist. At 23, I spent enough time in therapy to realize something wasn't working for me. There was plenty of validation and insight, but not always enough challenge, and I left too many sessions feeling understood without feeling changed. It made me ask a question that still shapes how I work: what kind of therapist would I have actually wanted to see? I studied Sociology at Hamilton College before earning my Master's in Mental Health Counseling at Hunter College. I trained in REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy) because I wanted to learn how to actively challenge the beliefs that keep people stuck. Later, I became certified in EMDR after growing interested in how memory, not just belief, shapes the way we experience ourselves and the world. My work also draws from attachment theory, parts work, and Choice Theory. I'm a generalist. The work goes furthest with people who are committed to the relationship and the effort more than to one particular topic. Material I frequently work with includes: Masculinity, and a version of it that's chosen rather than inherited Intimacy, closeness, distance, and repair Breakups and the end of a relationship Relationship conflict and couples therapy Parent-child relationships and family history Identity, including sexuality, gender, culture, faith, and class Kink, sex work, and desire without shame attached to it Complex trauma, with EMDR where it's useful When I'm not in session, I'm usually training for a triathlon, planning the next trip with my husband, or walking my Bernedoodle around SoHo.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I'm direct. I offer empathy and pushback in equal measure: I'll validate your experience when that's what's helpful, and I'll challenge your thinking when it's keeping you stuck. I believe both are necessary. If I think you're getting in your own way, I'll tell you, and I'll tell you why. My style is collaborative and deeply Socratic. A lot of what I do is ask questions that help you think about a familiar problem differently, rather than handing you answers. You'll get my honest read on things, and you're free to disagree with it. That's often where the useful conversation starts. I take the work seriously. I just don't think therapy has to feel stiff, detached, or scripted. My goal isn't for it to feel clinical or performative. It's for it to feel like two people doing difficult work together. The work begins with trust. Not the kind that's assumed, but the kind that's earned, so I don't expect it to be there on day one. A few other things worth knowing: I see individuals and couples, in person in the West Village and virtually. With couples, I'm less interested in who won the last argument than in the pattern underneath it, and what each person is actually asking for. If you're interested in EMDR, mention it early. We'll talk through whether it fits what you're working on, and it only happens at a pace you set. You don't need a tidy explanation of why you're here. "Something isn't working" is a perfectly good place to start. I'm likely a good fit if you want to be supported and challenged, and you're willing to put real effort into the work.

I used to think ‘trauma’ was something that happened to other people. But there were things in my past that I just never dealt with, and they were still running the show. EMDR with Benjamin helped in ways I can't really explain. It's really powerful and I'm so grateful for the work we did.
I overthink everything. Work decisions, relationships, emails, texts, I analyze them to death. Ben helped me get a handle on it. The way he explains things just makes sense, and his approach is practical, which I appreciate.
Ben cuts through the noise. He's direct without being pushy, and he actually helps you do something with your thoughts rather than just 'exploring' them forever. His approach made a lot of sense to me, and I finally feel like I'm not just reacting to life but actually in control of how I respond to it.
Came in for the end of a relationship. Ben helped me rebuild, plain and simple. He didn’t sugarcoat things, but he also didn't let me get stuck in the 'woe is me' cycle ("self-victimizing" as he says). Working with him gave me a clearer head, better boundaries, and an actual sense of direction again.
I spent years believing that pushing through stress was a badge of honor. Benjamin helped me realize that I was running myself into the ground. He didn’t just give me a bunch of self-care platitudes: he helped me change how I think about stress, success, and what I owe myself. If you're feeling like your life is running you instead of the other way around, go see him,
I thought I had to keep everything together all the time. Ben helped me see where that pressure was coming from and how much it was actually hurting me. The way he explains things is clear and logical, but also personal.
Ben is not one of those therapists who just nods and asks, ‘How does that make you feel?’ He actually challenges you, in a good way. He's really structured, always knows the goal, and I felt like we were progressing.
I had the privilege of working with Benjamin Goldman, LMHC, for a year and a half, and he's been a true lifesaver during a tough time in my life. What really stood out about Benjamin's therapy is how he dug deep into the root causes of my panic and relationship issues, rather than just dealing with surface-level symptoms. His insights into relationships helped me make big improvements in my personal connections, leading to healthier and more satisfying relationships. Benjamin played a crucial role in helping me regain control over my life, conquer my panic symptoms, and build better relationships. I'm incredibly thankful for his guidance, expertise, and unwavering support.
I have been struggling with some difficult issues, and Ben has been there for me every step of the way. He is an excellent listener and always make sure to give me the time and space I need to fully express myself. His empathy and understanding has been a huge help, and I feel so much better for having worked with him.
I was a little nervous about starting therapy, but Benjamin has made the process so much easier. He is an excellent listener and always make sure to give me the time and space I need to fully express myself. I’ve really been struggling with things with my relationships with others and opening up and I think that my relationship with Ben is really helping me be less afraid of opening myself up to others.
I have been seeing Ben for a few months now, and I am amazed at the progress I have made. Ben has a real talent for helping people to overcome their struggles, and I feel so much better for having worked with them. He uses REBT as his approach, something I knew nothing about, but now am really passionate about as a way of learning new ways of talking to myself. His kindness, compassion, and professionalism have been a huge help, and I am so grateful for their support.
Benjamin has been a tremendous help for me - as someone who was very nervous and hesitant about therapy, he helped me feel comfortable right away. The biggest thing is you can tell Benjamin really cares. He listens and offers the right mix of helpful insight as well as challenging your existing patterns of thinking to explore different options and perspectives while working through your problems. His approach feels very personal, addressing your problems directly and working together to reach achievable goals. I appreciate he can mix both easy to understand language along with explaining the therapeutic tools he is utilizing as well. I would highly recommend Benjamin!
Ben is the absolute best! He's kind and funny yet serious and intelligent. I've learned so much in just a year. Would recommend to anyone!
I have been struggling with some issues around school, getting ready for new financial commitments, and just a lot of change in my day to day life. Ben has been there for me every step of the way. He knows how to be serious when things need to be taken seriously, but also knows how to make me laugh at my own problems some times in order to not be so weighed down by life. Ben is really an excellent listener and always make sure to give me the time and space I need to fully express myself. His empathy and understanding have been a huge help, and I feel so much better for having worked with him.
I have been seeing Ben for the past 18 months, and it has been an incredibly helpful and positive experience. Ben is extremely kind, compassionate, and understanding, and has always made me feel comfortable and at ease during our sessions. He is very knowledgeable and able to provide me with valuable insights and strategies to help me navigate through some challenging times. I feel like I have made significant progress in my personal growth and well-being thanks to the guidance and support from Ben. I highly recommend Ben to anyone seeking a new therapist.
Ben has been an invaluable source of support and guidance for me for the past year of therapy! He has helped me to work through some really tough issues and to make significant progress in my personal growth. I appreciate Ben’s patience and understanding, and I feel so much more confident and self-assured thanks to their help. Highly recommend!
Benjamin is a truly special therapist. I’ve been working with him for over 6 months and have surprised myself on how much progress I made. I came in for your typical work anxiety but Ben helped me reframe my goals in a way that showed how some of my maladaptive behaviors were impacting not only work, but my relationship, friendships, and overall happiness. He knows when to allow me to just talk about my week vs. guide me to the type of therapeutic work I don’t like to do, but know is ultimately good for me. I have already referred 3 friends to him and will continue to do so.
