Betsheva Roytburd, MSW

Psychotherapist
34 Plz St E, Ste P109, Brooklyn, NY
I am a psychotherapist who works with individuals navigating anxiety, grief, burnout, relationship challenges, identity questions, and major life transitions. I approach therapy as a collaborative process and prioritize cultivating a therapeutic relationship in which experiences, emotions, and questions can be explored openly and without judgment. I invite clients to reflect on patterns in their lives while exploring the histories, stories, and personal narratives that shape how they understand themselves and their relationships. Through dialogue, new insights and possibilities can begin to emerge. My clinical approach integrates evidence-based practices including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), alongside narrative therapy, mindfulness practices, somatic awareness, creative art therapy, and psychodynamically informed perspectives. I work from a social justice–oriented perspective and attend to how social, cultural, and material conditions shape people’s lives and experiences. My work brings curiosity to how individuals make meaning of their experiences, with attention to language, the body, and the broader contexts in which grief and change take shape. I hold a Master of Social Work from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and a BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art. My clinical training includes facilitating creative art therapy groups and working in community-based mental health settings. Alongside my psychotherapy practice, I continue to work as an artist and curator and have helped organize community initiatives focused on mutual aid and supporting communities affected by war and displacement. I am fluent in English, Ukrainian, and Russian. My artistic practice, clinical training, and community work inform an approach that values creativity, reflection, and the possibilities that can emerge through conversation.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Our practice name is Roots and Branches Therapy. After you book your initial therapy session on ZocDoc you will get a call, email, or text from our team to schedule a 15-minute informational appointment with a member of the leadership team in our practice. The purpose of this appointment is to (1) ensure we are able to provide the services you are looking for, (2) discuss insurance/financial questions, (3) decide if you will meet in-person or via telehealth. The Leadership Team will also answer any questions you have. After your informational appointment, we will then send you intake documents via our portal that must be completed before your first session with your therapist.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session with all our therapists will be approximately 60-minutes and every weekly session thereafter will be 45 minutes. For individuals, our therapists will begin by taking your life history to better understand the context for your current goals and challenges. Over the next few weeks, you and your therapist will decide upon your goals for treatment. Each week, you will have the opportunity to process traumas, share challenges you are facing, celebrate victories, learn tools/techniques and strategize/role-play how to use them. Over time, your therapist will offer insights into your behaviors, validate your emotions, and help you become more connected, more effective, and less symptomatic. Couples therapy is a similar process with a few exceptions in the intake process. Couples will meet for 1 (occasionally 2) sessions where they will share their history as a couple. After the first session, you will complete a Gottman couples assessment online that will help us quickly identify your strengths and challenges as a couple. In the next two sessions, your therapist will meet with each member of the couple individually to take their life history and understand the relationship in the context of their individual story. In the fourth session, you will review the results of the assessment and any insights your therapist has based on the prior sessions. Together, you will prioritize where to focus treatment. Each week, you will address current/past hurts/challenges as well as learn and practice skills to help you cope with them.
