Brittany Gurney, MA

Psychotherapist
808 Un St, Ste 2A, Brooklyn, NY
I am a therapist specializing in working with children, adolescents, young adults, parents, and families to address common mental, emotional, and behavioral health difficulties. I am passionate about collaborating with families to identify each child’s unique strengths and challenges and work together to help them thrive. I have a particular focus on supporting Neurodivergent clients (ADHD and ASD), as well as those experiencing anxiety, phobias, depression, behavioral problems, and trauma. As an LGBTQIA+ and gender-affirming therapist, I strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for all clients. My approach to treatment is grounded in evidence-based therapies, including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Parent Management Training (PMT), as well as psychodynamic and play therapy. I hold a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Yeshiva University, which has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to provide compassionate, effective care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is to create a non-judgmental space to collaborate together on helping the client identify and work on goals to live their best life outside of sessions. I utilize evidence-based approaches but also love to be creative and tailor each therapy session to fit each individual person. I think therapy for children and teens offers its best potential when we work as a team along with parents and caregivers, while prioritizing the goals and needs of the client.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I usually meet with the child and their parents for the first session to identify symptoms, goals, and a treatment plan and being to get to know each other. Depending on the goals, sessions may be primarily with the child-only (with occasional check-ins regarding progress with parents), or a combination of child-only, family sessions with the child and their parents(s), and parent-only sessions regarding how to best support their child. With teens and children, sessions often include a combination of talking about problems, play therapy, psychoeducation, skills learning (e.g. CBT or social skills) and skills practice (e.g. exposure therapy).
