I believe the behavior we engage in has the purpose of protecting us from physical and emotional pain, or serves is in our efforts to find joy and happiness. Sometimes it is easy to see that it is working great! Sometimes, in spite of our intentions, we end up causing more problems for ourselves and in our relationships. With my clients I take an open approach to exploring why we engage in certain behaviors or have certain thoughts. I hold that the parts of us that drive those behaviors and thoughts need to be honored for their intent, which is to spare us from pain. I also recognize that sometimes those behaviors and thoughts are less helpful and end up causing more pain than they avoid. In therapy, we explore the parts of us that drive certain behavior and thoughts and help them to change the way the protect us. My clients have struggled with anxiety, posttraumatic stress, disenfranchised grief, depression, suicide, self-harm, somatic problems, and many more. Most of my career (9+ years) has been spent serving clients involved in the child welfare system. I have worked with children, adolescents, adults, and families. My primary modality is Internal Family Systems, which I find to be helpful and intuitive with most of my clients. I have also received training in several other modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Play Therapy, and Parent-Child Interactional Therapy (PCIT). My experience in child welfare and the diversity of clients served there has allowed me to develop skills needed to support clients with a wide variety of needs.
