Caitlin Eshelman, LICSW

Psychotherapist
DC
Hi there, I'm Caitlin! My name is Caitlin Eshelman, and I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) based in Washington, DC, working with fellow DC residents via telehealth. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from The Catholic University of America. I work with adult individuals and couples using a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach. I specialize in working with folks from the LGBTQ+, polyamorous, ethical non-monogamy (ENM), and sex/kink positive communities. My approach My approach varies based on individual client needs. I most frequently use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients identify their feelings and how those feelings affect their thoughts and behaviors. I also use trauma- and gender-informed care, as many clients have experienced support that did not honor their trauma history or self-identified gender. My focus I typically work with folks from LGBTQ+, poly, ENM, and kink communities. I also work with people who have a history of trauma and struggle with anxiety and depression. Usually, my clients have had a hard time finding a therapist who truly understands them and are glad to have found someone who sees them as a whole person. My communication style My communication style is casual, and I do not take myself or my work too seriously. I like to have back-and-forth conversations with clients but do not hesitate to shine a mirror on things if something doesn’t add up. My journey to mental healthcare I decided to become a therapist at age 14. I sought support (with my parents’ urging) and found that having someone objective to talk to and give advice was a game changer. I love being able to do for others what was done for me. My goals for you I believe the client is always in the driver’s seat in their therapy journey, and I am just the person holding the map to help navigate.
