Getting to know Carla Rose

A creative arts perspective to therapy assumes that each life is unique, each person is creative, and that change is possible through a therapeutic relationship. At some time, we all need help navigating the waters. The decision to begin therapy is the first step toward feeling better and finding ways to handle the stress and uncertainty that is part of life. I hold a Master's in Art Therapy from New York University and a Bachelor's degree from Cornell University, which have equipped me with the knowledge and skills to support individuals on their healing journeys.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Spending 15-20 minutes over the phone or video session gives us both an opportunity to see how we may work together. After a free consultation, I will send you some paperwork including an intake form and consent. I accept insurance through Headway. My approach to therapy is that presence, honesty, full disclosure and goals are helpful. I may nudge you out of your comfort zone when you are ready, by encouraging you to try something new. Including creative processes in therapy can lead to surprises and insights that are not as easy to come by through verbal processing alone.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Together, we will be accepting, curious, non-judging and compassionate. Typically, we will use various art materials including drawing, painting and using clay, collage and other construction materials to accompany the therapeutic journey and help tell your story. By using art, music, poetry and music, we work toward setting and accomplishing your goals. I believe in accountability, showing up and doing the work so that you will be able to develop the skills and confidence you need to take care of yourself.

Carla is an amazing art therapist! Her clinical expertise partnered with her warm approach are a great combination. She knows how to meet a client where they are at and provide opportunities for creative expression without expectation of artistic ability. She can guide you through the process of uncovering things you may not even know are there and then support you through exploring them.
