Getting to know Carly Barocas

Relationships are messy. That goes for the one with your partner and the one with yourself. Maybe you and your partner remember when things felt easy. When conversations flowed, and the connection felt electric. You're not sure how you got this far from that. Or maybe you've been carrying something heavier than you can explain, like anxiety, old patterns, or a quiet sense that something's off, and you're ready for something to actually change. I work with individuals and couples who want to understand what's really driving their distress, not just cope with it. For couples, that connection doesn't vanish. It gets buried under misaligned expectations, unspoken needs, and protective habits you both developed without realizing it. I help you cut through the noise to reach what's underneath: the emotional bids that go unnoticed, the needs behind recurring conflicts, and what it actually looks like for both of you to show up more fully. For individuals, the work often starts by tracing a familiar pattern. The same reactions, the same stuck places, until something shifts. I won't offer miracle cures or easy answers. I offer a real space to drop the performance and get honest. I draw from Gottman Method principles, DBT, CBT, ACT, and other evidence-based approaches, grounded by a Master's in Mental Health Counseling from NYU. More than any specific method, I trust what your situation actually calls for. The people who thrive in my practice aren't seeking perfection. They're pursuing something more real, built with intention and a deeper understanding of what's been getting in the way.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is warm, grounded, and occasionally humorous. Even in the hard work of therapy, there's room for lightness. I bring my full self to sessions and invite you to do the same. You don't need the right words or any knowledge of therapy concepts. We'll work with whatever you bring, wherever you are. If you're coming in as a couple: I don't take sides. I see relationships as systems where both people contribute to patterns. My role is to help you both understand those dynamics, not to determine who's right. You'll each be heard and supported equally. If you're coming in on your own: therapy with me tends to be collaborative and active. We won't just talk about things. We'll actually work to shift them. Either way, the goal is the same: a clearer understanding of yourself and what's possible.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We start with a free 15-minute consultation to talk through what's bringing you in and whether we're a good fit. From there, your first session is 50 minutes, followed by weekly 45-minute sessions. For couples, we'll identify the patterns pulling you into the same conflicts, build new ways of connecting, and develop practical skills: recognizing bids for connection, communicating needs more clearly, and navigating conflict without losing each other. For individuals, we'll work at a pace that makes sense for you, drawing on whatever combination of approaches fits your goals and how you're wired. I see therapy as a collaboration. I bring expertise in relationship dynamics and evidence-based tools. You bring expertise in yourself. My job is to help you find your way, whether that means back to something that once felt better or forward to somewhere new.
