Getting to know Carolyn Patterson

I help individuals and couples navigate relationship challenges, anxiety, and periods of transition. There are moments in life when you know that something needs to change, but the path forward is unclear. This can be overwhelming, confusing, and even scary. Sometimes, these struggles surface in our closest relationships, contributing to feelings of disconnection and frustration. You may recognize familiar patterns without knowing how to move beyond them. I see these uncomfortable moments as opportunities to understand yourself more deeply and begin creating something different. Together, we can make sense of the experiences that have shaped you and shift how you relate to yourself and the people in your life. Therapy can be a place to find more clarity and agency in areas that once felt stuck.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You do not need to start therapy knowing exactly what changes you want to see. Part of our work can be figuring out your goals. I want therapy to be a place where you can feel seen and bring forward parts of yourself that may be harder to show elsewhere. My style is compassionate, warm, and curious. During sessions, I am actively engaged and frequently share observations and questions. I also often return to threads from earlier in our work together to build a fuller picture of your experience. I specialize in working with anxiety, relationship challenges, and difficult family-of-origin experiences. I also work with couples who struggle to communicate effectively, including couples navigating non-monogamy. I also have extensive training in psychedelic therapy and offer psychedelic preparation and integration support. I love helping clients explore psychedelic experiences and catalyze moments of insight into lasting shifts. I also intentionally incorporate conversation about culture, community, and systems of power. Challenges don't form in a vacuum, so naming and exploring context is a vital part of my approach to therapy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work will develop around your needs, goals, and pace. Early sessions are an opportunity for me to understand what is bringing you to therapy now and significant parts of your life. We can also talk about your hopes and desires for the future, even if they are abstract. As therapy continues, we may dive deeper into relevant moments from your past. We can explore when key patterns developed, what purpose they may have served, and whether they are still helpful today. While understanding the past is important, our work will remain forward-looking. With couples, I often slow down recurring conflicts to understand what each person is experiencing beneath the surface. From there, we can begin intentionally shifting out of cycles of conflict and miscommunication. Building a strong therapeutic relationship is also an important part of our work together. I focus on creating a space where you feel supported and understood. I may challenge you or offer another way of looking at something, but the direction of our work will always be collaborative. I see therapy as an ongoing dialogue. I often invite reflection and feedback about your experience in therapy. If you notice things that aren’t working or areas you’d like to lean into more, we’ll adjust our work together accordingly. I believe that one of the most important parts about starting therapy is finding the right fit. I offer quick consultation calls to see if we could be a good match. These calls are also an opportunity for you to ask me any questions you might have.
