Psychotherapist
NY
Cherliz Cohen is a limited-permit psychotherapist working under the supervision of Vanessa Alpert. As a queer woman who grew up navigating multiple cultural identities, I know how meaningful it can be to feel seen and understood. In therapy, I strive to create a supportive and affirming space where you can explore your experiences openly and work toward meaningful growth. My approach to therapy is collaborative and tailored to each person’s unique needs. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy, Feminist Therapy, and culturally responsive practices to support individuals navigating a wide range of challenges. I also have additional training in working with LGBTQ+ and trans/GNC individuals, allowing me to provide affirming care for those exploring identity, relationships, and mental health. I have experience helping clients work through concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma related to sexual or domestic violence, and interpersonal challenges. I also support individuals who are navigating questions around identity, including sexual orientation, gender identity, cultural background, and how these parts of themselves intersect with relationships, family, and broader social environments. Whether we are developing coping strategies, exploring emotional patterns, processing difficult experiences, or reframing unhelpful thoughts, my goal is to support you in building insight, resilience, and self compassion. I earned my Master’s degree in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness from New York University, along with an advanced certificate in LGBTQ+ Health, Education, and Social Services. I am currently pursuing my Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) at Hofstra University as part of my commitment to continuing both my clinical work and advocacy. Therapy is not one-size-fits-all, and healing is rarely linear. My role is to walk alongside you, honor your experiences, and support you in creating meaningful and lasting change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me is collaborative, supportive, and grounded in curiosity rather than judgment. I believe therapy works best when clients feel safe to speak openly about their experiences, identities, and challenges. I aim to create a space where you can explore difficult emotions while also building practical tools for everyday life. Some sessions may focus on processing experiences and understanding patterns, while others may involve learning concrete coping skills, reframing unhelpful thoughts, or practicing new ways of responding to stress. I approach therapy with cultural awareness and an understanding that identity, relationships, and social environments all influence mental health. I strive to meet each client where they are and adjust my approach depending on their goals, needs, and pace. My role is not to tell you who to be or what decisions to make, but to help you gain clarity, strengthen your sense of self, and feel more equipped to navigate life’s challenges.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session usually focuses on getting to know you. We will talk about what brought you to therapy, the challenges you are currently experiencing, and what you hope to gain from the process. This conversation helps us begin to identify goals and determine how therapy can best support you. In ongoing sessions, we work together to better understand patterns in thoughts, emotions, and relationships that may be contributing to distress. Depending on your needs, sessions may include exploring past experiences, identifying triggers for anxiety or stress, developing coping strategies, and building new ways of responding to difficult situations. I often integrate structured approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with more exploratory conversations about emotions, relationships, and identity. Some sessions may focus on skill-building, while others may center on processing experiences and gaining deeper insight. Throughout the process, therapy remains collaborative. We regularly check in about what feels helpful, adjust goals as needed, and move at a pace that feels supportive and manageable for you.
