Getting to know Christiana Awosan

Christiana Awosan, PhD, LMFT, is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and their NJ license number is 37FI00180900 with a PhD in Couple and Family Therapy. Dr. Awosan specializes in providing culturally affirming and trauma-informed therapy to individuals, couples, and families, with a focus on supporting Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and LGBTQ+ communities. Her therapeutic style is warm, collaborative, and grounded in helping clients foster emotional connection, navigate conflict, and heal painful relational patterns. Integrating evidence-based approaches such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dr. Awosan helps clients build deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships. She also draws from multicultural, systemic, and contextual theories to honor the cultural and intergenerational experiences that shape people’s lives. Whether working with individuals exploring their identity, couples seeking greater intimacy, or families in transition, Dr. Awosan is committed to creating a safe and empowering space where clients can grow, connect, and thrive.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a new client, you can expect therapy with me to be collaborative, supportive, and culturally affirming. I work with individuals, couples and families navigating a range of concerns including depression, anxiety, infidelity, relationship difficulties, dating challenges, and life transitions. I have a particular passion for supporting BIPOC and LGBTQ+ individuals and relationships, as well as those in interracial romantic partnerships. My work is grounded in the Multicultural Relational Perspective—an approach that acknowledges and addresses the hidden wounds of marginalization, oppression, and stigma. I integrate evidence-based approaches such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Contextual Family Therapy. These methods emphasize the importance of family and intimate relationships in psychological well-being and help disrupt unhelpful communication and behavioral patterns. Together, we will explore the deeper emotional needs beneath your struggles and develop practical tools to transform and change the issues you bring to therapy, while working toward building a healing and more fulfilling life. Whether you’re seeking support for personal growth, relational challenges, or identity exploration, I offer a healing and affirming space that challenges you and helps you to feel seen, heard, and empowered.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work typically begins with a 45-minute initial assessment session, during which I’ll gather an understanding of what brings you to therapy, the origins of the issue, how it currently impacts your daily life, and the efforts you’ve already made to address it. We’ll also discuss your goals for therapy, what support you may need, and whether our therapeutic partnership feels like a good fit. If we choose to move forward together, our work will be a collaborative process. I will support you through this challenging time in a compassionate and affirming space. Together, we will acknowledge your pain and explore the many paths toward healing. You possess the inner wisdom to navigate your struggles, and my role is to help you uncover and strengthen that wisdom. My commitment is to support you in creating meaningful, lasting change in how you relate to yourself and others.
