Getting to know Dr. Courtney Ritter

I am a New York-based psychotherapist seeing individuals and couples. I also provide relationship consulting and coaching. I conducted my clinical training at the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (NPAP). My approach is guided by my training as a psychoanalyst, but I am a responsive and pragmatic therapist who draws on a wide variety of therapeutic techniques. Before becoming a therapist, I was an academic researcher and professor who examined the development of new forms of personal narrative. I hold a PhD in Communication from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor's degree from Cornell University. My research was enlivened by a passionate belief, shared by me and my research subjects, in the power of our own personal stories to create connection and, as a result, a more humane world. I bring my previous expertise in forms of personal narration into the room as I help my clients understand and reevaluate the stories that shape them. My hope is that together we can come to understand you and your story in new ways.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When working together, it is essential that I come to know and really understand what you’re struggling with and what you want for yourself. In this way, we can work from what you need and where you want to go. You'll have my attention and presence, my compassion and emotional sensitivity, my intelligence, warmth, and insightfulness as resources to draw on throughout the process.

I have only had one appointment thus far but I found Dr. Ritter to be a good listener and quite insightful. She immediately offered clarity to an experience that I’d had trouble understanding, while subtly exploring the edges of my experience. I felt seen. She is more of a psychodynamic therapist rather than DBT, which she was clear about. I intend to continue seeing her.
My appointment with Dr Ritter was excellent. Dr Ritter allowed me to speak and really listened to my concerns. The office is beautiful. Clean, spacious airy and free from clutter. From my first appointment Dr Ritter provided me with resources and information that have been very helpful.
Flexible, down to earth and genuine.
Courtney helped me find clarity in areas of my life that had always been stressful and confusing. She was a grounding presence when I was in crisis – I really credit her with helping me get through it. Now that my day to day is more stable, our sessions continue to be fruitful as we reflect on relationships and themes in my life. The exploration is illuminating. I can honestly say that our work has improved my quality of life! Courtney is insightful and empathetic. I have finally found a therapist that feel comfortable with. I can't recommend her enough.
