“Courtney is so good at working with athletes and you feel like she really gets you. She really understands the mindset, the drive, the difficulties. Never asks you to sacrifice your goals to be more "mentally healthy." She also has a style that makes it easy to talk about the hard stuff like eating and how you feel about your body as an athlete. Such a good choice for a therapist! ”

Getting to know Courtney Shields

**I ONLY SEE CLIENTS WHO ARE TEXAS RESIDENTS** Do you feel stuck between wanting to heal but not wanting to sacrifice your success? Do you feel burned out, exhausted, and ready to quit but still want to achieve your goals? Being an athlete and achiever comes with a lot of responsibility and expectation that can leave you feeling lost in the process. If you have been feeling frustrated and like you're hitting a brick wall in your mental health, eating, body image, or identity, I am the therapist ready to work with you! With a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Angelo State University, I use a collaborative approach to create a unique treatment plan tailored to help you accomplish your goals. Together, we will find a path forward that supports both your success and your well-being—without asking you to sacrifice what you have achieved. I believe you can have it all: your health, your sport or career, and fulfillment and joy.

What should a new client know about working with you?

**I ONLY SEE CLIENTS WHO ARE TEXAS RESIDENTS** If you're someone struggling with performance, eating concerns, body image concerns, or life transitions I am ready to help you tackle these topics together! There are numerous ways to approach therapy, but I believe that attuning to your unique needs and collaborating on how to achieve your goals will help you be the most successful in the quickest way. If you feel like your life experiences and values impact who you are, how you believe the world works, and how you operate within these different systems of our world, we can explore these values together and help you learn to live a life that is more aligned with your values and experiences. However, if these values or experiences are causing you pain I will help you to learn ways to distance yourself from them which makes it easier to identify the skills and values you hold that aid you in overcoming problems and creating a values-aligned life. If you want a space where you truly feel like you have a voice and equal power to make decisions for your life - welcome! We will work together to identify what to discuss in session, what skills to implement, and what to practice outside of session. I will act as the bumpers to ensure we are moving toward your goals, but you get to choose how fast, slow, and in what direction we go to reach those goals. I will help you to identify tangible, practical, achievable steps forward that can alleviate distress and create real change in your life without telling you what to do or shaming you into action.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

**I ONLY SEE CLIENTS WHO ARE TEXAS RESIDENTS** In our initial session, I will be assessing to see if your needs and my knowledge are a good fit to work together. If we agree we are a good fit, we will spend the next 2-5 sessions determining your goals and how to reach them. From there, we will get to work processing, rewriting stories, learning tangible skills, and finding ways to implement them to achieve your goals for therapy. Throughout this process I welcome feedback and collaboration to ensure we are focusing on what you need each session. Our work is fluid and ever changing, just like you!
