Getting to know Dana Brownstein
Dana Brownstein is a Licensed Psychoanalyst and EMDRIA-certified EMDR practitioner who works with patients in person in her NoLIta office or through a web-based app. She holds a Master’s in Psychology from Hunter College, City University of New York. Dana provides a supportive, peaceful, and safe environment for patients to explore their current pain points and past traumas. She reflects on her clients’ pasts with curiosity, patience, benevolence, and humor, using both psychodynamic approaches and EMDR.
Dana generally works with high-functioning, accomplished adults and college students who suffer from anxiety, depression, and trauma-related discomfort. Her clients include Asian immigrants (including “parachute kids”) and adult survivors of childhood trauma. Although her clients have generally achieved success and stability through their careers and academics, many have become consumed by an achievement-based checklist mentality and goals of perfection. This has alienated them from their need for connectedness and authentic relationships. This alienation often shows as free-floating anxiety and troubling interpersonal relationships, such as unsatisfying romantic relationships, toxic friendships, or workplace conflict. The roots of these experiences are often maladaptive coping mechanisms that worked earlier in life but limit them now.
Dana uses her trauma training to help clients identify triggers for anxiety and panic and develop strategies for experiencing them less painfully. She guides clients in reflecting on their interpersonal relationships, focusing on how they unconsciously cultivate relationships that re-enact painful earlier experiences. She also supports clients in exploring their relationships with themselves, identifying negative self-talk and self-sabotaging behaviors that hold them back from achieving their goals and experiencing profound satisfaction.
What should a new client know about working with you?
I work psychodynamically, and also use EMDR. I see patients a minimum of once a week, on a regularly scheduled day and time. Sessions are 45 minutes long. Although I am a psychoanalyst, I am fairly active in sessions.
Regarding EMDR, I use it under the following conditions:
-with regular patients of mine, who I have worked with for a while (long enough to determine if EMDR would be useful, and if they can withstand it).
-with patients who are in regular talk therapy with another clinician. I work adjunctively with other therapists, but only under conditions in which I have authorization to communicate openly with the main therapist.
-with new patients who are seeking help for a single incident trauma (such as a car accident, or single incident physical assault.
