“Dan Norton is one of the best therapists I have had. I am a college student who moved to New York and Dan has been my therapist going on 2+ years. Mental health and navigating relationships have always been difficult for me. I feel as though I have grown tremendously as a person (and even family members have taken notice of said growth) thanks to Dr. Norton because we have worked together through many issues such as overthinking, stress, anxiety, depression (dealing with loss and clinical depression). Sometimes my ADHD gets the best of me and I am late or miss appointments, so I do sincerely apologize for that. Additionally, doctor norton has always been patient, kind, and goes above and beyond to make sure patients such as myself are doing okay and are actively applying what we worked on in sessions to better ourselves/themselves. I highly recommend him to other people with adhd and issues with depression and emotional disregulation.”

Getting to know Daniel Norton

As a therapist with over 20 years of experience, I have developed a rich understanding of trauma and mental health, particularly in working with military personnel and veterans. My journey began as a freestyle wrestler, followed by service as a combat medic in the U.S. Army and later as a Naval Officer in the Medical Service Corps. I hold a Master's in Counseling Psychology from Gannon University and a Master's in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh. I have extensive training in various therapeutic modalities, including Psychodynamic, Interpersonal, Trauma, and Family Systems (IFS) approaches. I also incorporate evidence-based therapies such as Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I specialize in treating issues like depression, anxiety, and military-related trauma, focusing on providing a tailored treatment approach that emphasizes collaboration with clients. I believe in the uniqueness of every individual, striving to create an environment characterized by trust, compassion, respect, and empathy. In our sessions, we will pace treatment to help you heal from potentially painful memories that have led to feelings of being stuck, negative thoughts, and distrust in others. My commitment is to guide you toward a deeper understanding of yourself, facilitating lasting change through a process of self-discovery and emotional healing, integrating both traditional and non-traditional methods.

What should a new client know about working with you?

New clients should understand that my therapeutic approach is rooted in collaboration and open communication. From the outset, I work to create a safe and supportive environment, fostering trust and encouraging you to express your thoughts and feelings without hesitation. I utilize a blend of traditional talk therapy and non-traditional modalities, such as hypnosis, breathwork, EMDR, and meditation, designed to expedite the healing process. I value your input, ensuring that you are actively involved in setting achievable goals and exploring your personal experiences throughout our work together. My role is to listen, provide insights, and guide you as we navigate the complexities of your mental health. Together, we will uncover and address underlying issues that may be impacting your well-being. My approach is tailored to meet your unique needs, with an emphasis on creating a space where you feel comfortable and respected. As we embark on this journey, my goal is to empower you to gain deeper insights into your thoughts and emotions, leading to transformative healing and growth. I am dedicated to supporting you every step of the way, helping you unlock your potential for change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My typical process for working with clients is structured to ensure a safe, supportive, and effective therapeutic relationship that addresses your unique needs and goals. Initially, our journey begins with contact through a phone call, email, or an online platform, where we discuss basic information, scheduling, and any initial concerns you may have. I may offer a brief consultation to determine if we are a good fit for each other. In our first few sessions, we will engage in a comprehensive assessment process, discussing your personal history, background, and current challenges. Together, we will establish clear, achievable goals that will guide our therapeutic journey and serve as benchmarks for measuring progress. During our sessions, I will explain my therapeutic approach, ensuring you understand confidentiality, session frequency, and the techniques we will utilize. I draw from a variety of evidence-based approaches, tailoring our work to best suit your needs. Therapy is a collaborative process, and your active participation is essential. You will have the opportunity to explore your thoughts and feelings while identifying patterns and developing new coping strategies, all within a framework of empathy and understanding.

Dan is a supportive, caring therapist. I had been seeing him in Buffalo with his previous practice and I found him on ZocDoc and we reconnected. His approach is thoughtful and he applies different therapy styles depending on my needs. I would recommend him to anyone going through depression or anxiety.
First therapist I have seen that asked the right questions helping me communicate better and paid attention to what I was actually saying rather than sticking to a generic list of questions that only require yes/no responses.
