David Wilson, LLPC

Psychotherapist
MI
I'm Dr. Dave Wilson, a Michigan Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and National Certified Counselor (NCC). I provide trauma-informed psychotherapy for adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic stress, relationship challenges, and major life transitions. You may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck in familiar patterns, or frustrated that understanding a problem hasn't made it easier to change. Perhaps past experiences continue to affect your confidence, relationships, or ability to feel at ease. Therapy offers a place to make sense of those experiences without judgment, and to develop practical ways to move forward. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and grounded in evidence-based care. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), EMDR, mindfulness-based interventions, and Motivational Interviewing, tailoring our work to your needs and goals. I am EMDRIA-certified, and I recognize that no single method is right for everyone. I believe therapy should go beyond managing symptoms. Together, we can identify patterns that no longer serve you, strengthen emotional regulation, build healthier boundaries, improve communication, and develop greater confidence in handling life's challenges. We will work at a pace that respects your experiences while making room for meaningful change. My background includes a doctorate in Learning Sciences, graduate education in counseling psychology and business, and experience in healthcare, leadership, and entrepreneurship. These perspectives help me understand the many pressures people face in their personal and professional lives. Above all, I value a genuine therapeutic relationship. You deserve to feel heard, respected, and understood—not judged or reduced to a diagnosis. If you're ready to explore what could be different, I welcome the opportunity to work with you. I offer secure telehealth psychotherapy to adults throughout Michigan.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My therapeutic style is compassionate, collaborative, conversational, and practical. I believe a strong therapeutic relationship begins with trust, mutual respect, and feeling genuinely heard and understood. I strive to create a welcoming, nonjudgmental environment where you can speak openly, explore difficult experiences, and feel comfortable being yourself. During our first session, I'll take time to understand what brings you to therapy, the challenges you're experiencing, and what you hope to accomplish. We'll discuss relevant aspects of your personal history, relationships, and life circumstances while beginning to identify your goals. You won't be expected to share everything at once. Building trust takes time, and we'll move at a pace that respects your comfort and readiness. My approach is active and engaging. I don't believe therapy should consist solely of talking about problems. I'll listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, offer clinical insights, and help you recognize connections between your thoughts, emotions, experiences, and behaviors. At times, I may gently challenge perspectives or patterns that are keeping you stuck, always with compassion and respect. I integrate evidence-based therapeutic approaches with practical strategies that can help you navigate challenges outside our sessions. Together, we'll work to strengthen self-awareness, emotional regulation, communication, healthy boundaries, and your ability to respond to difficult situations with greater confidence and clarity. Above all, I view therapy as a partnership. My role isn't to tell you how to live your life, but to help you better understand yourself, discover new perspectives, and develop the skills to make meaningful, lasting changes consistent with your values. You can expect genuine conversation, thoughtful feedback, professional guidance, and a therapist who is invested in helping you make progress.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session is an opportunity to get acquainted, discuss what brings you to therapy, and understand your concerns, experiences, and goals. I'll ask about your history, relationships, and current circumstances so we can begin developing a treatment plan together. You won't be expected to share everything at once. Trust takes time. In later sessions, we'll typically check in on how you've been feeling, discuss what's happened since we last met, and focus on what matters most to you. We'll explore connections between your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and past experiences, including patterns that may be keeping you stuck. Values work is an important part of my approach. We'll explore what matters most to you, the person you want to be, and whether your choices and relationships reflect those values. This can help you resolve internal conflicts, set meaningful goals, and make decisions with greater clarity and purpose. My style is conversational, collaborative, and active. I listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, offer clinical insights, and respectfully challenge unhelpful patterns when appropriate. Depending on your needs, we may use cognitive and behavioral strategies, mindfulness, emotional regulation skills, trauma-informed interventions, and practical problem-solving. Therapy isn't limited to what happens during our appointments. We may identify skills to practice, boundaries to establish, or new ways to approach challenges in daily life. We'll review your progress and adjust our work as needed. Some sessions involve deeper emotional exploration; others focus on immediate concerns or practical next steps. My goal is for you to feel heard, understand yourself more fully, and build the confidence and skills to create lasting changes aligned with your values.
