Deborah Max, LCSW

Psychotherapist

Mental health treatment should never be traumatic. I am drawn to clinical work with individuals who have been historically mislabeled and misunderstood. I have successfully worked with many people whose prior negative treatment experiences gave them every reason not to trust me. Additionally, I have provided effective counsel to emergency room physicians and nurses. I recognize the significant stigma—often self-imposed—associated with medical professionals seeking mental health treatment. My experience in psychiatric emergency services has given me a deep appreciation for the unique stressors frontline workers face. I have been working in community mental health for 26 years. For the past 12, I have evaluated patients in psychiatric crisis in the local emergency room. One of the most frustrating aspects of this work has been the warm handoff and discharge planning. Unfortunately, the need for qualified and compassionate clinicians far exceeds the existing resources. The pandemic proved to be a golden opportunity for me; I used the quarantine period to obtain my MSW and then my licensure in New Jersey and Connecticut.

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.
