Getting to know Deborah Schaeffer

I’m Deborah, and I became a therapist because I believe every person deserves a space where their needs and growth take center stage. I combine psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral and trauma-informed practices to work with clients of all ages who are navigating trauma, anxiety, stress, and relationship issues, with a special focus on teens and young adults. As a queer, sex-positive therapist, I believe tolerating different expressions of gender and sexuality isn’t enough. I want to affirm, celebrate, and encourage the full expression of who you are. You will always be met with openness and curiosity when you walk in my door.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I still see my own therapist, so I know how it feels to do the difficult work each week. I believe you can't hold space for someone else's growth if you've stopped doing your own. A client once told me I earned their trust because they could tell my care came from the heart. I show up authentically to build that trust with you one session at a time.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Before becoming a therapist, I taught in alternative high schools for 17 years, working with young people who had overcome challenges most adults never have to face. Each and every day in those classrooms taught me about survival, hope and resilience. Joseph Campbell said, "Where you stumble, there lies your treasure." I’d love to help you find yours.
