Getting to know Dr. Desheane Newman

I am a Black, Queer Postdoctoral Fellow with a gentle soul and excellent training in psychology, including a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Palo Alto University - Mountain View Campus. I work with people from all backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, races, genders, sexualities, and abilities along the full spectrum of the diverse and interwoven human tapestry. I am experienced in individual, group, and couples psychotherapy. I work with adults facing depression, anxiety, trauma, as well as grief and loss, and relationship conflicts at work, in the family, and among intimate partners. I have often helped those dealing with issues of identity and marginality, and those carrying excessive stress in its various forms, including the misuse of substances and other behavioral challenges.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am committed to creating a therapeutic space that is welcoming, warm, authentic, supportive, and caring - and, at times, appropriately challenging. I focus on developing a strong therapeutic relationship, based in compassion. I strive to understand the struggles you may be experiencing in the context of your identity and the communities in which you live. I work diligently with you to come to know your world and what might help you understand, heal, recover, grow, and learn more coping skills that can lead to a more fulfilling life that is your own, and shared with those you value and who support you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I work using an integrative lens, with training and experience in various evidence-based practices, including acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic psychotherapy. I will work with you to identify the ways in which you want to heal and how you can get there. I am intentional about connecting and understanding how psychotherapy and evidence-based care practices can best help you. As we work together toward your healing, I will listen to you and welcome your feedback, recognize your strengths and vulnerabilities, and support you according to your goals, values, and hopes. I aim to help you inhabit a more full, authentic, fulfilling, life, less encumbered by symptoms and burdens that are not your own.

Ongoing session: $160-350 for 50 minutes
  • Sliding scale: Offers lower out-of-pocket fees on an individual basis, typically based on your ability to pay
  • Files your insurance claim: You pay the session fee upfront and the provider files the claim for you, so you can get reimbursed directly without worrying about the paperwork
  • Charges post-reimbursement amount: This provider will only charge you for the amount you pay after you get reimbursed from your insurance plan, so you don’t need to pay the session fee upfront

More information on payments and coverage

Bryant West Psychology works with most insurance plans (whether in-network or out-of-network) to make the financials easy, hassle-free, and paper-work-free for you. We can bill your insurance for you, and you can pay us any deductible and co-pays by credit card or through Zelle, as well as the old-fashioned ways, such as check or cash. In-Network: Our clinicians are providers in the following networks: Aetna and its affiliated insurances (Allied Benefit Systems - Aetna, Christian Brothers Services - Aetna, Health Scope - Aetna, Meritain, Nippon, Trustmark ) and student health insurance at NYU, Columbia, New School, Fordham, FIT, and Pratt. In-network, your insurance company sets our fees, co-pays, and deductibles, making our service more affordable. We will discuss this with you. Out-of-Network: We bill all insurance companies, such as United Health Care, Oxford, Cigna, Blue Cross/Shield, and Beacon (to name a few). Depending on your plan, your insurance may pay up to 80% of our fee (and sometimes more). We will do our best to work with you to make payment arrangements that won't break the bank—that is, your bank.
