Dishen Zhang, MA

Psychotherapist
NY
Hi, I’m Dishen. It is truly grateful to meet you here. As a therapist, my goal is to create a safe, genuine, and courageous space where you can reconnect with yourself, explore your story, and discover new possibilities for healing and growth. I offer bilingual counseling in English and Mandarin. My style is warm, collaborative, and strengths-based. I grew up in Henan, China—a place with scarce resources and fierce academic competition—where I weathered one of my hardest seasons and first discovered the power of therapy. I moved to the U.S. in 2023 and completed my Master’s in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness at New York University. These experiences shape how I show up in the room: with curiosity, compassion, a cross-cultural lens, and deep respect for your lived experience. Before joining It’s Never Too Late, I practiced in diverse settings, including university counseling centers, mental health hotlines, private mental health practices, and comprehensive clinics. I provided individual counseling, psychoeducation, and emotional support to adolescents, adults, couples, and families navigating challenges such as trauma, identity formation, and relational conflict.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me is less about following a fixed method and more about building a genuine, trusting relationship over time. I tend to approach therapy with curiosity and care, creating a space where you don’t have to have everything figured out, and where all parts of your experience are welcome. I am comfortable working with strong emotions, relational struggles, and moments that feel overwhelming or hard to make sense of. Rather than trying to “fix” or push things to change quickly, I focus on understanding what is happening beneath the surface, and supporting you in reconnecting with yourself in a way that feels meaningful and sustainable. Clients often find that our work is not just about solving a specific problem, but about developing a different way of relating to themselves and their experiences.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In a typical session, we begin by checking in on what feels most present for you—this could be something that happened recently, an ongoing situation, or a feeling that has been difficult to make sense of. From there, we follow what feels most meaningful, rather than adhering to a strict structure. Some sessions may focus on talking through experiences and patterns in your life or relationships, while others may involve slowing down and paying closer attention to your emotional or bodily responses in the moment. I may offer reflections, questions, or observations to help deepen your awareness. Over time, this process often leads to a deeper understanding of recurring patterns and opens space for new ways of experiencing and responding, both within yourself and in your relationships.
