Getting to know Dustin Chien

*Please note that I am an Out-of-Network Provider, which means I do not accept any insurance and my full fee is due on the day of our appointment. I provide a super-bill at the end of each month, which you may submit to your insurance company to request reimbursement. My practice is located in New York City, where I provide individual and couples therapy for adults from diverse backgrounds, including immigrants, 1.5+ generation Asian-Americans, 9/11 survivors, transgender folx, and more. I hold a Master's in Social Work from Hunter College, City University of New York, and a Bachelor's degree from New York University. AEDP and IFS Therapies: Therapy is a nonjudgmental and collaborative space where healing is experienced in the mind, body, and spirit. AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy) combines attachment, psychodynamic, and somatic therapies to kickstart the healing journey from the very first session. IFS (Internal Family Systems) helps to unpack the origins and meaning of our emotions, leading to greater integration of the multiple ?parts? that form our identities.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is warm and calm. My Asian-American identity helps me attune more easily with cross-cultural experiences and identify sources of intergenerational trauma that may be impacting your mood, anxiety, relationships and work. If you're looking to connect more deeply with yourself and others, then reach out for a free 15-minute consultation!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Individual therapy sessions are 45 min. I do not conduct a traditional "intake" session (e.g. where we discuss your symptoms, family history, etc. ) - that will come up organically. Instead, you begin with what brings you to therapy or what is on your mind, and I will help guide you to notice moments of significance where underlying emotions are either subtly or overwhelmingly being felt. By slowing down and noticing these feelings (often multiple at the same time), we will learn what events they may be connected to from the past, and what is needed now, to find relief, movement, and direction. My patients often report experiencing more confidence and energy as they develop more self-compassion, while finding relief from self-judgment, fear and shame.

I am considered an "out-of-network" provider. My fee is due on the day of our appointment. If you have out-of-network coverage, then a portion of my fee may be reimbursed to you through your insurance plan by submitting an itemized receipt called a super-bill, which I will provide to you on a monthly basis. Prior to booking an appointment, you can determine your out-of-pocket costs for therapy by calling your insurance plan and asking the following questions: 1) Do I have "out-of-network" benefits for mental health services? 2) What is my deductible? 3) What is the plan's reimbursement rate for individual therapy sessions (CPT code: 90834)?

Dustin is phenomenal as a therapist. He showed me the utmost care and guided me through effective techniques that have made a big difference in my life. He is an exceptional person to work with and I highly recommend him.
Tried a few therapists that didn't work out for me before trying Dustin, who I really vibed with. He is an awesome, unassuming listener who asks great questions and never made me feel awkward or out of place. Highly recommend.
Dustin is a kind, patient and professional therapist. He is an active listener who offered me therapeutic advice that worked well with my needs as a client. He answered any question I had about his methods and had an excellent memory of what we had covered in previous sessions. I was a client for almost a year and I look forward to checking back in with him when it's necessary.
Dustin is an extremely empathetic and emotionally attuned to his clients - he helped me understand anxiety as a physiological sensation and has helped me assess it as more as a physical reaction more so than thoughts in my head. Would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a therapist in new york
Dustin feels like home. In a world filled with instability and danger, he provides an environment of predictability and certainty. If you’ve ever had a bad experience with therapists before or doubt the benefits of psychotherapy, I assure you Dustin will make you feel at ease. Every session, he is fully present and actively listening to you without judgement. You’ll feel seen, heard and, most importantly, you’ll feel like you belong. Wherever you may be, I wish you the best on your healing journey and I hope you can give Dustin a chance.
