Getting to know Dr. Elaine Yudkovitz

Someday I would like to write a book entitled, "Living Fully and Meaningfully When Times Are Hard." Meanwhile, I am committed to providing a therapeutic relationship that helps an individual, a couple, or a family find the resilience in themselves to do just that! Times can be hard because we are under relational stress from partners, children, families, parents, friends, or coworkers-or from the loneliness that comes from the absence of these; the financial stresses of our lives; the stresses of demanding or unfulfilling careers or vocational searching; the traumatic residue of past or present emotional or physical situations or abuses; or the stresses of physiology that don't always let us function as we would like, such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or ADD. I believe that habits can change, that brains can change, and that ways of thinking and relating can change through work that uses relational talk therapy, problem-solving strategies, mindfulness and self-regulation techniques, and trauma and stress reduction approaches. I work with adults, individually and in couples, as well as children and adolescents with all these issues. In addition, I have a soft spot in my heart and extensive clinical training and expertise in working with very young children and their parents, from 6 months of age and upward, who have attachment, relational, communication, separation, regulatory, and self-esteem issues. My work with all patients of all ages is fed by that passionate and compassionate belief that we all deserve to live fully and meaningfully in every chapter of our lives. I hold a Master's in Social Work from City University of New York, Hunter College; a PhD from Columbia University, Teachers College; and a certificate from the Alfred Adler Institute.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Since i believe that change happens in the relationship between patient and therapist, i am relationally interactive. the questions i ask are to help me understand but also to help you lisen to your own thoughts and ideas and experiences in a more transparent way than maybe you do when you are alone or with friends. Perhaps the answers are there- right there - in the self talk?

What is your typical process for working with clients?

While I am basically a talk therapist, I believe strongly that our bodies hold our experience, including our traumas small and large, and therefore, the signals it gives and the changes it can bring, need our attention too.
