I think the most important part of beginning a therapeutic relationship is finding the right 'fit.' You're coming to be helped, you also have some sense of the kind of help you need. As a clinician with over four decades of experience, and the ability to work with multiple modalities (including but not limited to Cognitive Therapies, Psychodynamic Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy, 12-step approaches, Mindfulness, Emotional Freedom Technique, etc.), together we would create a comfortable and safe milieu for you to explore why you seek therapy at this point in your life. A treatment plan would be developed with specific goals and objectives designed for and by you, with my assistance. A therapeutic relationship takes a little while to develop, but at its inception should create a feeling of trust and hopefulness. After all of these years of working with others, I am still amazed by the resilience of humans, and at the amazing inner worlds of clients in whose metamorphoses I have been allowed to participate! Since we're all on this journey through life together, my orientation is less that of the 'one who knows what's wrong,' and more like that of a fellow traveler who knows the inner terrain of the psyche and functions as a guide in your process of inner exploration and change.
