Emily Hein, LMSW

Emily Hein, LMSW

Psychotherapist
NY
I am committed to equipping and empowering clients with the necessary tools to effectively understand and manage their mental health. I am especially passionate about anxiety disorders, OCD, trauma, and queer and trans community work. As a proud member of the queer community myself, I understand the importance of LGBTQ+ visibility in the therapeutic space. In my work with individuals of all ages, my number one priority is creating a comfortable, person-centered, and safely challenging environment where clients can move at their own pace and trust that they will be met with understanding, support, and respect. While I am formally trained in ERP and LGBTQ+ centered CBT, I am adaptable in my treatment style and believe that supporting client needs and fostering the therapeutic relationship is key. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from New York University and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I might be a good fit for you if: …you’re looking for a trauma-informed, empathetic space to explore difficult prior experiences, at your own pace and without judgment …you want to work with someone who will (appropriately) break the fourth wall and bring the humanity back into therapy …you’re at any stage of learning about your queer or trans identity, at any age …you’re the caregiver or loved one of someone in the LGBTQ+ community and want to provide support but don’t quite know how to yet …you’re new to therapy and want to work with someone who recognizes how scary and vulnerable this step can be …you’re learning how to rebuild trustworthy relationships (of all kinds) following a trauma

What is your typical process for working with clients?

This will vary depending on what your goals are, how much of a structure you prefer in your sessions, and how you’re feeling week to week. Generally, though, my therapeutic approach invovles empowering clients to feel more in touch with their emotions, more confident in themselves, and more accepting of the scarier things that can come up in life — whether that’s relationships, life adjustments, or identity discovery. Simply put, I’m here to be a guide through the more overwhelming and stressful parts of existing, whatever that may mean to you. I pull from several different techniques, including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and LGBTQ+ informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). These approaches differ slightly from one another, but at their core, they all involve exercising self-compassion, identifying your strengths, and developing the confidence to confront what scares you (at your own pace, of course).
