Thank you for visiting my profile! I’m a psychotherapist specializing in eating disorders and common co-existing conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and OCD. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from Columbia University and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut. Over the years, I've developed an affinity for working with adolescents and young adults in particular, although I do treat across the lifespan. My approach is collaborative, warm, and genuine. Getting to know Emily Kaplan

Thank you for visiting my profile! I’m a psychotherapist specializing in eating disorders and common co-existing conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and OCD. In developing this specific niche of practice, I’ve completed a range of intensive trainings and am able to offer my clients research-supported, well-considered, and proven treatments for the specific conditions that bring them to therapy. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from Columbia University and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut. Over the years, I've developed an affinity for working with adolescents and young adults in particular, although I do treat across the lifespan. My approach is collaborative, warm, and genuine. What should a new client know about working with you?

There are three evidence-based, primary treatments that I commonly implement in my practice. The first is Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT-E) which is considered the gold-standard transdiagnostic model for the treatment of eating disorders. Most people with eating disorders will benefit from this particular therapy and since it’s especially efficient in terms of time (20-40 weeks) and, consequently, cost, it’s important to consider this modality as an option right off the bat. A second line treatment that I offer is called Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). DBT was initially developed to treat borderline personality disorder but is now used to treat a range of challenges by focusing on building skills necessary to cope with strong or intolerable emotions. For children or adolescents with eating disorders, Family-Based Treatment is typically my first line. FBT is the gold-standard protocol for young people with moderate to severe anorexia; FBT shows promise for treating youth with bulimia nervosa, as well. FBT empowers parents to step in to guide the renourishment process for their child. I provide direct skills and coaching to parents and concurrently, support the teen in tolerating the emotions that are activated throughout the process of recovery. In addition to the aforementioned modalities, I have advanced training in DBT-Prolonged Exposure for PTSD (DBT-PE), CBT for ARFID, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Specialist Supportive Clinical Management (SSCM) for severe and enduring anorexia nervosa.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Achieving a sense of calm and well-being may not be as far away as you think. I’m an active and collaborative clinician who works hard to help my clients forward. At the treatment start, we focus on getting a clear understanding of the factors that may be keeping you stuck in unproductive or unhealthy patterns. This insight and clarity is followed by establishing a clear treatment plan designed to unsettle problematic patterns and support swift movement forward. As we work through treatment, we will regularly evaluate how things are going and make adjustments wherever necessary to support steady progress. I don’t believe that therapy should go on indefinitely. Effective therapy helps you meet your goals so you can actually graduate (!) and open up the time and energy to live your life fully and with total presence and vitality.
