Erika Bugaj, LICSW

Psychotherapist
4000 Albemarle St NW, Washington, DC
I’m Erika Bugaj, a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) with over 20 years of experience supporting adults through life’s most meaningful transitions. My work is especially focused on the perinatal period — pregnancy, postpartum, pregnancy loss, and the emotional landscape of new parenthood. My path to this specialty is personal. As a mother who navigated my own challenges around the birth of my first child, I understand how isolating that season of life can feel. That experience shaped the kind of therapist I’ve become. I hold a Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C), reflecting my commitment to specialized care for women and birthing people during this vulnerable time. I blend evidence-informed modalities with nature-informed therapy — an approach that taps into the grounding, healing qualities of the natural world. My goal is a space that is both clinically thoughtful and genuinely warm, where you feel seen. I work with: • Women and birthing people during pregnancy and postpartum • Postpartum depression, anxiety, and OCD • Pregnancy and infant loss • Identity shifts around becoming a parent • Individual adults navigating life transitions

What should a new client know about working with you?

What is Nature-informed therapy? Nature-informed therapy combines the healing effects of nature with therapeutic practices. It encourages restoration, self-reflection, and supports the change-making process. Nature-informed therapy can take place in nature, such as walking together in Rock Creek Park (if you are local to the Washington, DC area). Some ways to incorporate nature into in-person or virtual sessions might be to introduce objects, such as seashells, stones, leaves, or other found nature objects.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We can start with a brief introductory visit, to see if we are a good fit and to confirm that our logistics match up! Then, we will meet for 2-4 sessions to assess your goals and create a plan together.
