Getting to know Evan Malater
We all have times of feeling stuck, trapped, worried, anxious, depressed, and overwhelmed-caught in repeating patterns in life and relationships. Instead of being a victim of unconscious patterns, we can learn better ways to see and move past obstacles and blocks. Beyond the specific problem, you may experience a loss of energy or hope and a tendency to withdraw or avoid difficult tasks or relationships. You might begin to feel demoralized and full of judgment toward yourself and others. Drawing on my education from City University of New York, Hunter College, where I earned a Master's in Clinical Social Work, and my PhD in Philosophy from the European Graduate School, I am committed to helping you break free from these cycles and find renewed strength and clarity.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
My approach combines a deep appreciation of unconscious forces with aspects of mindfulness and meditation as well as aspects of cogitive reframing of unproductive assumptions and judgments. Specialities are anxiety, relationship issues, depression, social anxiety, obsessiveness, blocks of creative work in artists, actors, and others in creative fields. You will find that work begins with close attention to the specific history of your issues and proceeds to form a joint agreement about the aims of therapy.
