Frances Jin, LMHC

Frances Jin, LMHC

Psychotherapist
26 Court St, Brooklyn, NY
I believe that all people are resilient, adaptive, and capable of change, even in moments when they feel stuck or disconnected in their lives. I work with adults and couples going through life transitions, in periods of acute stress, or those who are interested in gaining insight into how to live more genuine, authentic lives. I recognize that in this moment of growing injustice and diminishing structural support, people are now doubly tasked with finding their way through life. I'm interested in working with those who struggle to manage their own or others’ high expectations in uncertain times, and who are seeking more connection in their relationships with others and with themselves. I especially enjoy working with first and second generation Americans, and others who navigate intersecting and conflicting identities and sets of values. I believe strongly in people’s ability to create the lives they want for themselves. Before becoming a therapist, I spent over a decade building a career in the corporate and tech worlds, and earned my Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from Hunter College, and my Bachelor’s in Economics from Harvard University.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I approach therapy from a psychodynamic lens, which means that I believe there is value not just in understanding what your symptoms are today, but also how they came to be—whether they are ways we learned to adapt in situations that no longer exist; whether they are how we act in response to a feeling we aren’t even aware we are experiencing. We’ll work together to uncover some of the “why” underneath the “what”, to provide real, lasting, embodied change. We’ll also work relationally, which essentially means I believe that trusting, engaged, meaningful relationships—including between therapist and client—are fundamental parts of how we grow and heal.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

To start, we'll do a free, 15-minute video consultation to see if we're a good fit to work together and for you to ask me any questions you have. From there, I work with all clients on at least a weekly basis, and do not offer less frequent therapy at this time. Clinical experience and research indicate that therapy is most successful on a weekly basis, at least. As you’ll find once you start, a lot happens in a week. Therapy is an investment in yourself, and you are worth more than a quick fix or infrequent check-in.
