Getting to know Gwyneth Wheeler

Gwyn is a psychodynamic psychotherapist who works with both adolescents and adults seeking thoughtful, structured, and emotionally attuned care. She is particularly experienced in supporting patients who struggle with anxiety, depression, feelings of shame, complex trauma, emotional awareness/regulation, and protective coping patterns such as perfectionism, avoidance, and self-abandonment. Gwyn’s approach is well-suited for individuals looking for a deeper understanding of themselves and the complex ways in which they have adapted to the world around them. Gwyn is an integrative, collaborative, and engaging psychotherapist. She works to create a space marked by curiosity, exploration, warmth, and compassion for her patients’ disavowed emotions, relationship struggles, and protective (though sometimes unhelpful) coping strategies. Gwyn gently assists her patients in leaning into the discomfort of looking inward, guiding them to safely explore the root causes of presenting challenges in a way that fosters greater self-awareness and lasting behavioral change. Throughout the long-term process of uncovering unconscious patterns, she is deeply committed to containing space for her patient's lived reality while also providing concrete, evidence-based tools to support healing. Her work helps patients process trauma, develop healthier coping skills, gain insight, and establish new ways of relating to themselves and others. Gwyn holds a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from City University of New York, City College. Her theoretical orientation includes Psychodynamic and Relational Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS) ("parts" work), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), trauma-informed approaches, and the Gottman Method for couple work. Her clinical training also includes Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which she integrates thoughtfully within a relational, psychodynamic framework to support both emotional processing as well as tangible behavioral and insight.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In a session with Gwyn, she is mindful of striking a balance between providing empathy and support while still challenging patients to help them reach their goals. Gwyn specializes in the treatment of relationship difficulties, anxiety/mood disorders, life transitions, trauma recovery, and identity issues, and works primarily with adult individuals. Her approach to therapy is primarily integrative and is rooted in psychodynamic, Internal Family Systems (IFS “parts” work), and relational therapies. In working with couples, Gwyn pulls from the Gottman method while maintaining a relational/psychodynamic frame. She is trained in a number of behavioral and mindfulness-based interventions and utilizes such techniques as needed through collaboration with her clients. Whether working with individuals or couples, Gwyn strongly believes that through exploration, patients may deepen their connection with themselves and others, establish stability, and take on life with newfound confidence.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In the beginning of treatment, Gwyn will work mindfully and collaboratively with each patient to establish trust and safety in the therapeutic relationship. She firmly believes that the alliance between the client and therapist is deeply transformative in itself, and therefore the treatment process will always be rooted in maintaining a strong and unique relational bond. Throughout treatment, Gwyn will help patients focus on the ways they have adapted to the world as she believes that these adaptations function in various ways to perpetuate their anxieties, motivations/behaviors, emotional triggers, and coping mechanisms. She hopes to foster compassion and integration within the client to help them readjust how they interact with themselves, others, and the world around them in healthier and more fulfilling ways.

Gwyn is so warm, kind, friendly, and very easy to talk to! From our very first session, I was so comfortable and did not expect to open up as much as I did. Gwyn is very knowledgeable and is able to pull apart certain things I would say and bring it to the forefront for me to think about. She has given me a different perspective on things and tools for me to apply to my lifestyle. I came to Gwyn right at the beginning of a crisis. She has been an amazing check in for me and I look forward to our sessions together in the future.
Life changing.
