Getting to know Dr. Hannah Geller

I am a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst committed to helping adults, children, and adolescents improve their lives. My work focuses on in-depth treatment of emotional, behavioral, and relationships issues that impede functioning and well-being. I believe in addressing the roots of problems to create lasting change. I began my career by training at NYU and working at New York-Presbyterian Weill-Cornell and Bellevue Hospital. I pursued advanced studies in psychotherapy at Psychoanalytic Association of New York (PANY), affiliated with NYU Langone School of Medicine, where I am currently an adult and child/adolescent psychoanalytic candidate. Previously, I trained at Metropolitan Institute for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with a focus on children and adolescents. I also have advanced training in DBT and ACT models, as well as a JD from Columbia and BA from Yale.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Whether you are working with me as a therapist for yourself or for your child, you will find that I am a warm, experienced, and effective partner in creating lasting change. Our work together will focus on addressing the roots of problems by developing insight as well as practical everyday solutions. My training as a child and adult psychoanalyst has provided me with extensive knowledge of development, conflicts, and interpersonal relationships. My additional training in CBT, DBT, ACT, and play therapy has provided me with tools that resonate with a broad range of individuals. I have extensive experience treating a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, addiction issues, learning differences, ADHD, behavioral issues, and difficulties with school, work, and relationships.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I will meet with new clients two to three times for a consultation. If the client is a child, I will also meet with their parent or parents two to three times. This period focuses on an in-depth assessment to fully understand the problems for which treatment is being sought. At the end of this period, I will provide recommendations for treatment, and work with the client and/or their parents to implement them. When I work with clients for ongoing psychotherapy, I recommend regular meetings, at least weekly for 45-minute sessions. When clients are children, I typically meet with the parent or parents at least once per month. I have been trained to work with people intensively through psychoanalysis and, depending on the particular client and their problems, I have often found that increased frequency of sessions allows for faster, deeper, and longer lasting results.
