Getting to know Dr. Helen Hu

Hello there! I am a postdoctoral clinical psychologist at Bryant West Psychology where I conduct individual, family, and group therapy both online throughout New York state and in person at our practice location in Midtown. My focus is primarily on helping preteens, teens, young adults, and adults navigate life's challenges and process ongoing dynamics in order to feel better equipped to move through the world. I received my doctorate in clinical psychology from The City College of New York and completed my predoctoral internship at Elmhurst Hospital Center in Queens, a public hospital where I saw patients in inpatient, partial hospitalization, emergency room, and outpatient settings. I've also completed training at the CUNY Graduate Center's Student Counseling Services, St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, and City College's community mental health clinic. My specialties include mood disorders, complex trauma and PTSD, self-injurious behavior, body dysmorphia, substance use, life transitions, and questions of identity, culture, and belonging, particularly among BIPOC individuals.

What should a new client know about working with you?

No two therapies are the same, and I prioritize tailoring your experience in treatment to your specific goals and needs. Although my background is primarily psychodynamic, I use an integrative approach to bring in aspects of other therapy types to help you most effectively. What comes into the therapy space is always an open conversation between us.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I often start out treatment by getting to know your experience in therapy (or, if this is your first time in therapy, what you anticipate it to be like). We will work together to identify goals and areas you would like to focus on. However, the bulk of therapy can really take any on form from there: life circumstances change, my understanding of you will change over the course of our work together, and your understanding of yourself will also change in some way. This gives us the freedom to use our initial sessions as touch points and develop the therapeutic space to be more aligned to whatever comes up in treatment, including incorporating tools from modalities including CBT, DBT, and EFT.
