Hollis Witherspoon, LCAT

Psychotherapist
37 Greenpoint Ave, Brooklyn, NY
Hello! I am a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist, Psychotherapist, and Registered Drama Therapist offering in-person and telehealth therapy sessions in New York. My road to becoming a therapist was paved on the path of life experience. I’ve always been deeply curious about people and how our backgrounds, cultures, family lives, and internalized messages have helped shape who we are and how we want to show up in the world. I studied Medical Anthropology and Theatre at Princeton University, followed by training at a Meisner acting conservatory. I spent years spent working as an actor and improviser in New York City. During this time, I developed an improv-based technique for folks who did not identify as performers but were seeking ways to freely express themselves. While using these techniques with residents at a residential eating disorder center, the therapeutic value of expressive work became critically apparent. Since receiving my Masters's degree in Drama Therapy from New York University, I have taught my unique curriculum at institutions such as Pratt Institute, Columbia University, New York University, and the School of Visual Arts. I have also provided individual and group creative arts therapy and trauma-informed psychotherapy to clients from all walks of life, including military veterans, social workers, fine arts faculty, school administrators, therapists, kids, teens, adults, and couples. I will work closely with you to foster hope, and confidence and find effective strategies for expressing your full and authentic self. I look forward to talking soon!

What should a new client know about working with you?

I work with adults who suffer from anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, and imposter syndrome, often stemming from trauma. The unknown in life transitions can be scary and l can offer compassionate and creative ways to support the healing process.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Sometimes talking is just not enough. Weaving in role-play, writing, improv, metaphor, art-making, and other creative prompts, I help clients explore a fuller picture of themselves and their experiences. It's even possible that therapy can be fun. Together we will explore the stories you tell and the roles you play in your life and how they do or do not serve you. We will create space for safe expression and reflection, talk, think, and wonder, and ultimately, seek a place of acceptance and understanding.
