“Ian always gives me incredibly positive counseling sessions. I tried several personal therapists before and they always focus on helping me understand different concept of cognitive behavior counseling. Ian’s knowledge and expertise were immediately evident as he skillfully identified and addressed my needs right from the start, knowing what I need is not only learning the cognitive behavior skillsets but also exploring the value and meaning of my life. As a finance professional, I was always asked to be emotional stable. Ian’s warm and compassionate tone creates a supportive environment where I feel comfortable expressing myself. I'm impressed by the quality of care I received and would highly recommend their services to anyone seeking effective therapy.”

“Ian is a confident and caring individual, who gives a feeling of trust and reassurance that is not seen in many people. His approach is a thoughtful mix of insite and progress from within. He don't tell you how to feel, but just leads you to a point where you understand how you feel, and what that means. With this understanding he works with you, to better determine how it all fits together, and gain clarity of the situation. I can't recommend this man enough and thank him for being the outstanding therapist he truly is.”

Getting to know Ian Richmond

We often hear that life is about fun and adventure, yet how often is it filled with dread, fear, and emptiness? Perhaps you are struggling with workplace anxiety, maintaining relationships, or simply finding it hard to feel happy and be yourself. Many of my clients are young professionals with education and resources yet feel stymied and frustrated. I invite you to be authentic with yourself, give yourself room to breathe, and find solace in working with someone who will never judge you and will offer unconditional support. While eclectic and drawing from multiple modalities, I favor using acceptance and commitment therapy. We will utilize mindfulness meditation, defuse from maladaptive thoughts, and embrace and commit to your values and sense of meaning. I also connect deeply with Carl Rogers' teachings, which highlight the beauty of a mutual journey where therapist and client are fellow travelers learning from each other. I look forward to helping you find the answers that are dormant inside of you. I hold a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Yeshiva University, which has equipped me with a strong foundation to support you effectively. Starting a therapeutic relationship may feel intimidating, but you'll find it becomes natural and comfortable as we get to know each other.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I take both an active and passive style. The active style includes teaching techniques such as mindfulness and perspective taking. The passive style involves helping you figure things out in a supportive and therapeutic context. The truth is, you know your issues better than I ever will. Thus, I view therapy as a partnership in which we work together to find the right path forward.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During the first few sessions we focus on what brings you to counseling followed by your family and life history. Once we get to know each other better, we transition to goal setting and setting the stage for what our time together will look like. Therapy itself is more conversational. My goal is to create an enjoyable and comfortable environment where we work together on making progress.

Main thing is that it was too early to play “devil’s advocate,” especially considering it was the first session and I was talking about a narcissist in my life. But otherwise got good vibes from him.
