Psychotherapist
ME
Welcome! I am Innes, the energetic owner and counselor of Black Cat Counseling LLC in Maine. I hold a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Southern Maine. My telehealth private practice is centered on taking a holistic approach to supporting a diverse collection of people with their mental health concerns. With every client, I use the Rogerian skills of empathy, genuineness, and active listening, along with other strengths-based interventions. I believe it is important to meet a client where they are at and that they lead their treatment goals. Going to counseling can be nerve-wracking, and I do my best to create a comfortable and safe space on the screen.

Getting to know Innes Demers

Welcome! I am Innes, the energetic owner and counselor of Black Cat Counseling LLC in Maine. I hold a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Southern Maine. What should a new client know about working with you?

Over the past 3 years as a counselor, I've worked with adolescents, teenagers and adults with anxiety disorders, PTSD, and brain injury. I am also EMDR certified for those with PTSD who are interested in learning more about this intervention. Art and play therapy are other means for emotional expression I'll use with clients, even on the telehealth platform. My sweet, black cat, Spectra, will also be a frequent fixture on the screen as well. She has been tagging along in sessions since she was only 10 weeks old!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

For our first session, my hope is to start to build a therapeutic rapport with my client(s). During that time, I will listen to what they are looking for support with, as well as learn some of your history to best understand that different dynamics in their life. I typically do not formulate a diagnosis on the first session, but prefer to learn more about the client to accurately assess symptoms. I have a variety of assessments I utilize to accompany what I learn in session through observation and discussion, as means of an objective measure for diagnosis. Most sessions following will be client centered and driven to best support the client in meeting their mental health goals.
