Getting to know James Musante

Life can be a struggle filled with frustration and distress that disrupts daily living. Commonly, this is characterized as depression, distressing levels of anger or high anxiety, and/or dysfunctional behaviors that work against one's self-interest, one's self-image, or one’s emotional balance. Not uncommonly, a past history of experiencing traumatic events can contribute to one’s current distress. For over 30 years, as a LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) providing mental health counseling to thousands of clients, I primarily use Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT/REBT) strategies and a life skills approach (e.g., emotional management skills; communication skills; conflict resolution skills; etc) to help clients with clinical levels of anxiety and depression. I generally use the similar protocol of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD and trauma. One recent study of CBT characterizes CBT as the “gold standard” of psychotherapies, due to its widely researched and highly effective results, especially to address mood disorders and trauma: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5797481/ For almost three decades, I've worked extensively in the areas of emotional management, relationship counseling, family abuse, conflict resolution, and the challenges of the military lifestyle. Such experiences provide me the opportunity to work and learn from many diverse populations, including military members and their families, professionals, couples, the LGBT community and communities of color, and participants in the cycle of family abuse. I am a graduate of the Counseling program (Marriage and Family emphasis) at the University of Colorado, where I received my MA (with Honors) in 1995, and subsequently was an Instructor in that Counseling program. In addition, I did post-graduate advanced training with Dr. Albert Ellis, the founder of the REBT/CBT therapy orientation.
