Jamil Shakoor, LMSW

Psychotherapist
NY
I'm a LMSW specializing in conflict management, relationships, and providing philosophical frameworks for making sense out of the complexities inherent in life. My therapeutic approach is rooted in person-centered therapy, also known as Rogerian therapy. Person-centered therapy posits we all have an organismic or "authentic self" which we can lose connection with as we navigate life and work hard to check off cultural milestones such as graduating college and getting marriage. As I see it, my role is to help you restore and nurture your connection with your organismic self so you can live a life that feels more congruent with what matters most to you. To live authentically requires you to be honest with yourself and others; it also requires courage and the willingness to risk letting go of things that may not stand up to a truer expression of yourself at home, work, and in your relationships. Telling and living your truth can be tough work, but there is no substitute for it.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Like most therapists, I am able to hold a safe space for you to express your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs no matter what they are. At the same time, if I sense there are things about your perspective that contribute to an excess of negativity and keeping you from bettering your circumstances, I will call it out. Our sessions will likely vary: some sessions are more laid back (providing a space for you to unload), while others may be more demanding (challenging your perspective, and formulating actions plans). I am also a certified personal trainer and ultra-marathoner. So, if necessary—and it often is—I could help you come up with effective ways to incorporate exercise into your life. This often takes the form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During our first couple of sessions, we will try to name the most pressing issues in your life. This will help guide our sessions and give us goals to work towards. At the same time, I am flexible in my approach as you will likely not show up feeling the same way for each session. At certain points during our work together you may feel like you want to use your session to express your frustrations with someone or something instead of discussing your progress towards goals. As I see it, the therapeutic process ought to be flexible, yet keep you honest as you work towards bettering your circumstances.
