Getting to know Jana Davis

Are you ready for something different? Would you like to begin feeling more free from anxiety or depression? Maybe you want to break free from trauma that feels stuck to the mind like glue, or from the confusing aftermath of abuse by a narcissistic person. My name is Jana Davis. I have twenty years of experience as a human-focused, compassionate therapist. I am an HSP (highly sensitive person), which means that when I am with a client, I naturally connect with them on a deep level. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. My clinical background is in trauma, and I had the honor of serving those who serve by working with the Navy. During that time, I learned and practiced EMDR, Prolonged Exposure Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and Solution-Based Therapy. As I progressed, I worked exclusively with military trauma. The goal of my practice is to set people free from the emotional pain and mental prisons that hold them back. I have found that when people are freed from what has internally hurt them, their natural selves rise to the surface. They feel like their true selves. It is a beautiful process that I am privileged to be part of and to witness. While highly rewarding, working with trauma was sometimes emotionally painful. Even with knowledge of these therapies, clients often had to relive their trauma as part of treatment. Many pushed through, succeeded, and found the relief they desperately needed, but it was often an emotionally grueling process. After years of exploring different techniques, I took my first course in Rapid Resolution Therapy in early 2017. Since then, in private practice, I have never looked back. I finally found a therapy that does not require emotional reliving and is much faster. I no longer practice reliving forms of therapy because they are completely unnecessary.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I'm down to earth. I do not speak nor act clinical. If I do please alert me to this so I can correct it! I have a lot of empathy as well as humor. I am originally from Southern Illinois and have also spent years in Coastal Virginia, so my accent is southern as well as midwestern. While I am professional, I choose to be my authentic self. It is typical for me to work without makeup and in a comfortable shirt with my business logo. I am a human who sees other humans. Just like anybody else in this field, we have to do an assessment first. By the end of that initial session, I'll want to make sure that I understand what it is that you want, and we will be creating a plan to achieve that. Every licensed person in mental health must diagnose. It is the only way insurance is going to pick it up. I share diagnosis with my clients and invite them to agree/disagree/voice concerns. While I accept insurance I do not work for the insurance company. I work for my client. So if you choose me, know I never forget who my 'boss' really is. I like to go fast. So if it is a traumatic experience I will be moving toward assisting that quickly. I'm not talking months but rather a few sessions. If it is psycho education needed (this is especially true for narcissistic experiences) I will be doing that quickly. My clients are coming in for relief and to be freed up from the most inner parts of themselves. I see no reason to waste time with that. Some clients enjoy supportive sessions after having relief. It may be once every two weeks or once a month. It is good to have a place to freely speak, to discuss current concerns, and to maintain and continue to grow. Others find relief and off they go... but they know they're always welcome back when and if they need.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Since the process has been described above, I'd like to focus on inner barriers. I think for anybody starting services anywhere (with a psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist) the paperwork and the first session is the most difficult in my opinion. People aren't making appointments because they feel good, right? So within the paperwork is listing symptoms, how they are hurting in some way. Then comes the appointment with the provider and just hoping that they are emotionally understanding... because the opposite is feeling judged. So other than the paperwork I think the biggest hurdle is having the first session. I know what it feels like to be judged and I do not want any part in that.
