Getting to know Jason Marx

As a psychoanalytically-oriented clinician who works from a depth perspective, my foremost aim is to develop an open, compassionate, and trusting relationship with you so that you feel free to share those issues that most burden you-those issues for which you need careful, caring, and respectful attention. I have worked mostly with adults in individual, couples, and group psychotherapy who have struggled with anxiety, depression, panic, trauma (including childhood abuse and neglect), PTSD, and substance use issues. I am also sensitive to the needs of people of diverse identities. I hold a Master's in Social Work from New York University, which has provided a strong foundation for my clinical approach. In our work together, by following your lead, we will increase our understanding of what most troubles you. We will explore the possibly unconscious core roots of many issues you carry that contribute to distressing psychological symptoms, including self-defeating behaviors, relationship patterns, and reliance on maladaptive coping. My aim is to help you free yourself from old behaviors, assumptions, and beliefs while renegotiating your relationship with yourself, others, and life itself. The goal is to enrich your capacity to be more present and effective and to gain greater satisfaction, fulfillment, support, and joy in love, work, and community.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am an Out of Network provider that works with your out of network insurance benefits. I am offering in-person sessions in mid-town Manhattan for individuals and couples. My approach is grounded in Jungian Theory, Self-Psychology, and Psychodynamic Theory to help patients better understand how to relate to and experience their emotions without judgment and without shame. This is a trauma informed approach that specializes in the here-and-now to heal past injuries that are impacting the present.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I focus on helping patients relate to and understand unconscious material in order to relieve stress, heal trauma, and move forward in your life. Our weekly talk therapeutic process will be led by you with the content you decide to explore and discuss in session. In that way, each process is unique to the patient as I meet you where you are at without fitting you into any predetermined mold or treatment.

I could say so much about Jason Marx but in short I'll say that he's has been not only greatly supportive and caring but also an insightful guiding light on the mission of self betterment that I'm on. He's truly true blue.
Jason has been incredibly helpful in a short amount of time. He is a great listener who has been able to give a new perspective and help me make some necessary changes.
I’ve been seeing Jason for a couple years now and he’s truly helped me so much. As a QPOC in recovery it’s always been a bit challenging to find a provider, but Jason is thoughtful, mindful, and aware. Jason has worked with me throughout setbacks in my sobriety and has been a big part of my growth. I would absolutely recommend Jason to a loved one.
Jason is extremely patient and empathetic. I always felt seen and heard and validated, but never coddled. He gently challenged me when necessary balanced with words of encouragement. I would very much recommend him.
I was feeling stuck in my career, depressed after a divorce, and angry at the world for passing me by. Jason helped me find the courage within myself to face some pretty dark stuff and take my life in a new direction, as well as find the strength to forgive myself and others. I feel more my true "self" than ever after working with him. He was patient, understanding, honest, and direct, which I really needed. Thank you, Jason!
