Getting to know Jason Walter

Thanks for checking out my profile. I’m Jason. I was a Chef for the first half of my life running some of the biggest and best facilities in the Twin Cities. At the age of 30 I landed in rehab, got sober, and decided to pursue something different. I started college while building on my recovery. I worked with addicts in treatment centers for a decade and then went off on my own in private practice. I am a licensed drug and alcohol counselor as well as a licensed professional clinical counselor. I also do a lot of work with compulsive gamblers, anger management, criminality, and trauma. I’ve worked in Detox, outpatient, inpatient, locked facilities, in home therapy, and Telehealth. I’ve attended training all over the country and have been actively participating in my own therapy for almost 20 years. I continue to find value in attending AA regularly and there aren’t many self help books that haven’t ended up in my library. Being committed to my own growth is very important to me and my experiences have helped me tremendously as a clinician. I’ve worked with people ranging from violent criminals on parole to soccer moms needing some emotional support. I’m very open minded and unorthodox and do my best to meet you where you’re at.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I’m a big believer that most of our issues today are just manifestations of trauma from the past. We tend to have patterned behaviors and that pattern had a point of origination. I can be very structured and directive and really push to get to the core issues so that we can put them to bed. I’m also capable of checking in on how the week is going, allowing you to vent, and processing things as they arise.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Sessions generally start with a check in on your week. Sometime the entire session is spent processing that, depending on how difficult it was. Usually we move from that into a specific topic that needs some processing and begin digging around as you tell your story and we work to connect the dots to how this is relative to today’s issues. I’m a fan of assigning homework to expedite the process if you’re open to it. If that’s not your style, we can get to all of the answers in session.

Don’t see your insurance?

Out-of-pocket fees and assistance
Initial session: $250 for 45 minutes
Ongoing session: $250 for 45 minutes
  • Files your insurance claim: You pay the session fee upfront and the provider files the claim for you, so you can get reimbursed directly without worrying about the paperwork
  • Charges post-reimbursement amount: This provider will only charge you for the amount you pay after you get reimbursed from your insurance plan, so you don’t need to pay the session fee upfront

More information on payments and coverage

I do take several types of insurance. What you owe per session depends on whether I take it, if the deductible is fulfilled, and what your copay is. Whatever is due from you is billed per session. I bill your insurance for the rest. I also have grant money to cover therapy for those struggling with gambling.
