Getting to know Jean Odachowski

I am a licensed professional counselor who loves to engage with clients as quickly as possible to help them return fully to their lives without the distressing symptoms they experienced before entering therapy. I believe that developing a close therapeutic relationship is key to this process. I focus on what my client wants to work on, although I may make suggestions. That said, client satisfaction and symptom reduction are my primary goals. I truly enjoy the process of assisting people to improve their situation, whatever that may be. I hold a Master of Education in Community Mental Health from the University of Lynchburg, which has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to support clients effectively. You can book directly with me through Zocdoc. I accept several insurance plans, which are billed through the Headway Platform. I will need your insurance ID information for the Headway Platform. If you prefer a self-pay option rather than using insurance, please note that in your appointment request, as I have an alternative method for that process. Sessions are billed at $130 for individual sessions and $150 for couples therapy for self-pay. After the booking is confirmed through Headway, you'll receive a link to the session which is held on Headway's video platform. Please note that Medicaid and Medicare plans are not accepted at this time. My practice name is Red Door Counseling. I chose to name my practice Red Door because, hundreds of years ago, a red door was significant as a place of sanctuary and safety. I believe that, in its best form, that is what counseling should represent.

What should a new client know about working with you?

***My practice is web based and I will send you a video link prior to our first appointment. This comes from Headway which is my electronic health record and HIPPA compliant video service. I'll send forms to you through the portal that will need to be acknowledged prior to the first appointment. **** During our first session, I'll want to learn as much as possible about you, your story, the symptoms that are bothering you and what you have already tried to improve them. At this time, you share with me what you are comfortable sharing. I am mindful of the fact that you don't know me and that your story may be painful to share. Along the way, I'll ask questions for clarity and most likely ask about sleep, eating, exercise, and relaxation. No judgement from me if you don't have regular routines for these. We will talk about them, and I will likely make some suggestions of things for you to try. My therapy style is kind of informal. I like to put people at ease, we laugh sometimes, I do some teaching about your brain and how it can help you to reduce symptoms as well as techniques you can begin to use to regulate your nervous system.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

After that first session, I like to dive in to a check in each week, where you tell me about what is uppermost on your mind. I look for ways to connect what is going on currently with the history you described in the first session. I'll ask you about treatment goals and we will develop a treatment plan that will address the things you most want to work on. I do a fair amount of time preparing you to talk about the painful topics we may need to cover. This is a very individual process and I follow your lead to determine when it's time to move into more difficult territory. For people with trauma histories, I use several different evidence-based techniques depending on your preference and my best clinical judgement. I employ narrative therapy, EMDR, and other cognitive techniques for learning to manage the symptoms you may experience and for working through the experiences you have had. For young children and their families, I use Parent Child Interaction Therapy. This is also an evidence-based treatment, and we complete measurements every week, that will show you just how much progress you and your child are making. That treatment is specifically designed for children ages 2-6.11 years. Children who exhibit oppositional behaviors, separation anxiety, have a history of trauma or separation from their parents respond well to PCIT. Children on the autism spectrum can also benefit from PCIT. Children of other ages can benefit from therapeutic games, art activities, and cognitive therapies. With adults I look at many factors to help remediate symptoms. Things such as relationships, developmental stages, employment and retirement goals can often be a focus of treatment.

I use the Headway platform to bill insurance companies and collect co-pays. The process is very simple for clients. Each client gets a welcome email inviting them to confirm the insurance billing, submit a co-pay method and, an acknowledgement of the billing forms. Once our session is complete, I confirm the session to Headway and billing occurs. I accept Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of VA, Aetna; Cigna; United Health care. Oxford, Oscar Health and now Blue Cross Blue shield of Massachusetts. I also accept self-pay. I do not accept Medicare or Medicaid for billing. The appointment you choose is very important to me and I would like to confirm it as soon as possible. If I can't I'll try to contact you, but if I can't reach you, I'll cancel the appointment. When properly arranged, we can reschedule the appointment at a later date.

Not a surprise to us that a therapist/professional counselor would be a good listener, but Jean was especially good at picking up the details and providing a reasonable plan and explanation for our situation. We sought out care for one of our sons, and from our impression of our first appointment with Jean, we're hopeful that we've found the right care to help our son. We'll update as we get more experience with Jean, but so far so good.
