Psychotherapist
NY
Sometimes we come to therapy knowing exactly what we want help with. Other times, we simply know that something isn't working- that we're hurting, stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or repeating patterns we don't understand. You don't have to have the answers before we begin. I am a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst with extensive experience working with people through some of the most difficult and complicated parts of their lives. I specialize in trauma, including complex trauma, and have worked extensively with grief and loss, relationship difficulties, anxiety and depression, chronic illness, and serious or terminal diagnoses. I know that some experiences are messy, painful, or difficult to put into words- and that it can take time to feel safe enough to share them. My role is not to judge, rush, or try to make you fit into a particular framework. I listen carefully and bring curiosity, steadiness, and clinical experience to the work. Together, we can begin wherever you are, make room for what has happened to you, and gradually develop a deeper understanding of the patterns and experiences that have shaped you. My years of working within LGBTQ+ communities are an important part of my practice, and I offer a sex-positive, affirming space to explore queer identities, relationships, and sexualities. At the same time, my practice is broad and welcoming to people across identities and life experiences. If you've ever felt “othered"- because of race, class, gender, sexuality, or simply because you didn't feel like you fit- I want there to be room for that experience here. I believe therapy can offer something both simple and profound: a place where you don't have to hide the difficult parts of yourself, and where, over time, change becomes possible. You don't have to tell me everything on the first day. We can take the time to get there together.

Getting to know Jessica Brown

Sometimes we come to therapy knowing exactly what we want help with. You don't have to have the answers before we begin. What should a new client know about working with you?

You don't have to arrive knowing exactly what you need from therapy, and you certainly don't have to tell me everything right away. Trust develops over time. My job is to meet you where you are and create enough safety and space for us to become curious about what is happening beneath the surface, at a pace that feels workable for you. I am warm and engaged, but I also won't shy away from difficult material. Over the years, I have worked with people carrying complicated histories, painful relationships, trauma, loss, illness, and experiences they may have never felt comfortable sharing with anyone else. I don't expect therapy- or people- to be neat. I listen closely and thoughtfully, while remaining an active participant in the work. I may ask questions, notice patterns, make connections, or gently invite you to look at something from a different angle. I won't impose an agenda on you, but I also won't simply sit back and listen without helping us make sense of what emerges. My hope is that, over time, you come to feel both deeply seen and more at home with yourself. We will work together to understand what has shaped you, make room for the parts of your experience that may be difficult to face, and find possibilities for living and relating differently.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first sessions are primarily about getting to know one another. I'll want to understand what brings you to therapy, what has been happening in your life, what you're hoping might change, and anything you feel is important for me to know. There is no expectation that you will have a perfectly organized story- or that you will disclose things before you're ready. As we continue, we'll develop a shared understanding of what you're experiencing and what may be contributing to it. Sessions may focus on something happening in the present, a relationship that is troubling you, a recurring pattern, a difficult emotion, or an experience from your past that continues to have an impact. I draw from multiple therapeutic approaches and tailor the work to each individual. Sometimes therapy involves making sense of something that has felt confusing for years; sometimes it means developing new ways of responding to emotions or relationships; and sometimes it means having a place to finally say something out loud and have it met with care rather than judgment. There is no single formula for therapy. We will move at a pace that respects where you are while remaining open to where the work can take you. My hope is that, over time, you feel more grounded, more connected to yourself and others, and more able to make choices that feel genuinely your own.
