Jinyao Hu, EdM

Psychotherapist
NY
I am a mental health counselor who works with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, perfectionism, low self-esteem, emotional dysregulation, identity concerns, and major life transitions. My approach is integrative, trauma-informed, and collaborative. I draw from EMDR, DBT, and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), depending on the client’s needs and goals. I often use DBT to support emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal skills, while EFT helps clients better understand their emotions, underlying needs, and relationship patterns. When trauma or unresolved past experiences are affecting a client’s present life, I may incorporate EMDR using the eight-phase model. For clients with complex trauma or CPTSD, I take a slower and more flexible approach, with greater emphasis on stabilization, grounding, resource development, and careful pacing before and during trauma processing. My goal is to help clients better understand themselves, develop more effective ways of coping, and create meaningful changes in their relationships and daily lives while providing a therapeutic relationship that feels safe, thoughtful, and genuine. * Please be advised that Jinyao has a provisional license as a psychotherapist with the title of Mental Health Counselor – Limited Permit and works under the supervision of Cristina Camarda, LMHC-D as an employee of KDMHC.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I try to create a space where clients can be honest without feeling pressured to have everything figured out. You do not need to come into therapy knowing exactly what is wrong or what you want to work on. We can figure that out together. My style is warm, collaborative, and flexible. I will listen closely, ask questions, and help you notice patterns in your emotions, relationships, and ways of coping. I may also gently challenge you when I think something important is being avoided or overlooked, but I try to do that in a way that feels respectful and supportive. I do not believe therapy should look the same for everyone. Some clients benefit from practical coping skills and more present-focused work, while others want to explore deeper emotional, relational, or trauma-related experiences. I adjust the pace based on what feels manageable and useful for you, and I welcome feedback about what is or is not working in therapy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I usually start by getting to know what is bringing the client in, what has been feeling difficult lately, and what they would like to get out of therapy. I also spend time building trust and understanding how they tend to cope, relate to others, and respond when they feel overwhelmed. My approach is flexible depending on what the client needs. For clients dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, perfectionism, self-esteem concerns, emotional overwhelm, or life transitions, I may use DBT skills to help with coping and emotion regulation, and EFT to help clients better understand what they are feeling and what they need. If past experiences or trauma seem to be strongly affecting the client’s present life, I may also use EMDR. I follow the eight phases of EMDR, but I do not rush into processing. I spend time making sure the client feels safe, has enough coping tools, and feels ready. For clients with complex trauma or CPTSD, I usually take a slower and more flexible approach. We may spend more time on stabilization, grounding, emotional regulation, and building internal resources before processing difficult memories. I also pay close attention to dissociation, the client’s level of activation, and whether we need to work with smaller pieces of a memory or move back and forth between processing and stabilization. Throughout the process, I continue using DBT and EFT to support emotional regulation, grounding, and the therapeutic relationship. Overall, I try to meet clients where they are rather than following one fixed method. Some clients benefit more from practical skills and present-focused work, while others may want to explore deeper emotional or trauma-related patterns. I adjust the pace and approach based on what feels most helpful for each client.
