Getting to know Joseph Nord

Please READ BEFORE BOOKING: This is a private-pay and out-of-network therapy practice. I am NOT in-network with any insurance plans. If you have out-of-network mental health benefits, your insurance may reimburse a portion of the session fee after your deductible is met. In some cases, this can reduce the cost of a session by around 50-80%, though reimbursement varies. I can provide a superbill. BACKGROUND Before becoming a therapist, I spent 18 years in Division I athletics and combat sports — five as a competitive athlete and thirteen as a coach. Nine of those years were spent coaching wrestling at Columbia University in NYC. Over time, my role evolved into broader leadership responsibilities within the program, including serving as Associate Head Coach. These were high-intensity and high demand environments that required discipline, resilience, and focus. Working at that level meant thinking not only about performance, but about culture — how standards are set, how trust is built, and how individuals develop within a team. I saw how ambition and pressure shape identity. I also became aware of how much our confidence, stress, and sense of direction are influenced by the people and relationships around us. Over time, I grew increasingly interested in how people think, interpret their experiences, and make decisions — especially when expectations are high. My move into therapy developed from that interest. EDUCATION & TRAINING I earned a Master in Psychological Counseling and a Master in Mental Health Counseling from Columbia University. I also hold an MBA from Gardner Web University and a BA in Applied Economics from the University of Minnesota. My background in economics sharpened my interest in rational decision-making — and in the very human ways we can become irrational when navigating uncertainty, emotion, relationships and high stakes. If you believe this is the kind of work that would be useful for you at this stage, I invite you to reach out.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy, as I practice it, is not simply about reducing symptoms. It is about developing a clearer relationship to yourself — your values, your relationships, and the direction you want to take. Our work includes both warmth and challenge. At times it is serious; at times it includes humor and perspective. I have advanced training in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) from the renowned Albert Ellis Institute in New York City. My clinical work integrates REBT/CBT, ACT, and Existential therapy, informed by philosophical traditions that emphasize perspective, responsibility, and deliberate choice.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Therapy here is structured and reflective. We examine the beliefs and narratives shaping your emotional responses, clarify your values, and build practical flexibility in how you respond to stress and uncertainty. It requires learning to listen to your internal experience clearly enough to decide what you want to commit to, what you are willing to let go of, and how you want to move forward. We will challenge patterns and assumptions that may be keeping you stuck — particularly the conclusions you carry about yourself, others, and what is possible. Together, we decide which of those assumptions still serve you, and which no longer do.

Over the course of about one year my sessions with Joe changed the trajectory of my life. Could not recommend more.
He is very supportive and easy to talk to. He is professional and respectful especially when discussing female issues.
Joe is great! Very helpful on the topic of work stress. Highly recommend him!
Encouraging. Helpful. Empathetic. Understanding. Clear.
Joe creates a safe, welcoming space allowing comfort and ease to open up. He is a warm and friendly therapist who is ready to support you through listening without judgement and provide practical insights and strategies. Joe knows how to challenge in a constructive, respectful way that really encourages growth. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a therapist who combines empathy with real progress and accountability.
Working with Joe was fantastic. He was patient and kind, made me feel comfortable opening up, and really helped me with some really heavy issues.
I would highly recommend Joe as a therapist. He is a fantastic listener and has very strong empathy. He really helped me view situations in my life in ways that I had never thought of before. Joe is a genuinely good guy and cares a lot about his patients and the profession of therapy as a whole. He is a great communicator and is always open to rescheduling or moving appointments as needed.
Joe is the best therapist I have ever had. He is kind, caring and truly understood my needs. Every week I looked forward to my sessions with him. I felt like I was going to chat with an old friend and to me that means a lot. I would highly recommend Joe as your therapist.
Joe is an excellent provider. He is the most present and authentic practitioner I have ever worked with. He's highly skilled at helping you wrestle with your issues and work toward realistic and achievable goals. I can't recommend him highly enough.
Joe listens with careful and patient attention. His perception, kindess and knowledgeable professional guidance are helping me to develop new insight and skills. Highly recommend.
I can't speak highly enough of Joe. He’s helped me navigate challenges more effectively by showing me the importance of questioning my own thoughts and core beliefs about myself and others. He asks just the right questions that push me to think further, and honestly, I now find myself 'hearing' his voice in my head right when I'm about to fall into old, unhealthy patterns. Joe is clearly well-read and has recommended several books and readings that have had a real impact on how I live (and frankly, gave me some great topics to talk about with friends!). I never thought I'd say this, but I can see myself sticking with therapy for a long time because I find my time with Joe so valuable. Highly recommend!
I was overly impressed with the professionalism and ease at which Joe conducted himself during our appointment. I was skeptical about therapy entering my first appointment but was plesantly surprised at his disarming nature, making me feel very comfortable discussing my personal story with him, almost immediately. He was engaging and provoked a lot of thought and self-reflection on my part. I think "fit" is important and he was definitely a great fit for me. I would absolutely recommend seeking out Joe's services.
Joe is very thoughtful and practical. He constantly draws from his vast knowledge and understanding of useful philosophy as well as personal experience with difficult situations to provide clear insight and advice. I have generally been skeptical of most therapists as I believe many of them can lack the willingness to really challenge people to change, and don't provide their patients with real tools to better themselves for the long-term. Joe is not like this. His approach is to genuinely help you develop the skills needed to take ownership of your life. If you want to be a stronger, more resilient, man/woman, I highly recommend that you see Joe!
Exceptional experience.
Listened and gave helpful feedback.
Joe is incredibly patient, kind, and thoughtful. His insights have proved invaluable throughout our relationship and I trust him implicitly. I would highly recomend him to any patient looking for a valuable tool to work on themselves and a safe space to explore their feelings about life.
Joe made me feel really comfortable in my intake session. I just started therapy for the first time and our sessions have been really helpful. He is both understanding and compassionate while offering me another perspective to consider. Our sessions have been the highlight of my week and I look forward to learning more about myself. Thank you Joe!
I had a really wonderful experience with Joe, he was kind, understanding and very easy to talk to. He has provided me with many helpful tools to manage my stress and rise above any setbacks. Overall I find Joe very easy to talk to and very practical with his advice and helping me overcome my issues. I highly recommend him!
Joe is an exceptional therapist who creates a safe, supportive space for growth. His calm demeanor, thoughtful insights, and genuine care have been invaluable in helping me navigate challenges. He’s skilled, professional, and truly committed to his clients’ well-being. Highly recommend!
