Julia Ramirez, MS

Psychotherapist
928 Broadway, Ste 205, New York, NY
I am a bilingual (English and Spanish) mental health counselor, and I work with adolescents and adults who may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or pulled in different directions in their lives — whether that’s within family relationships, cultural expectations, or major life changes. You might be carrying a lot of pressure — from family, school, relationships, or your own expectations — and finding that it’s becoming harder to manage stress, self-doubt, or difficult emotions. You may feel caught between different parts of your identity or unsure how to move forward in a way that feels true to you. For some, this shows up in family conflict, shifting relationships, or the challenges of parenting or growing into a new stage of life. My approach is grounded in emotion-focused and relational therapy. In our work together, we pay close attention to your emotional patterns and the experiences that have shaped how you respond to stress and relationships. Therapy becomes a space to slow things down, make sense of what you’re feeling, and begin to respond to yourself and others with more clarity, steadiness, and confidence. Before becoming a therapist, I spent over a decade working in the New York City public school system supporting children, adolescents, and families through academic stress, behavioral challenges, and family conflict. That experience continues to shape how I work — with patience, practicality, and an understanding of how real-life pressures impact emotional well-being. As a Dominican immigrant and a mother, I understand how culture, identity, immigration experiences, and family expectations can shape how you see yourself and move through the world. You don’t have to explain everything from the beginning — I aim to meet you with understanding while also helping you make sense of your experiences in a deeper way. I work with adolescents, young adults, and adults.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In our first sessions, we focus on understanding what has been happening in your life and what has brought you to therapy at this moment. This includes learning about the relationships, responsibilities, and experiences that have shaped how you see yourself and respond to stress. I approach this process with deep respect for the ways that culture, family history, immigration experiences, and social environments influence emotional well-being. Many people carry pressures or expectations that are tied not only to their personal history, but also to the communities and cultures they come from. Part of our work together is understanding how these lived experiences shape your identity, your relationships, and the challenges you may be facing today. As therapy progresses, we look more closely at emotional patterns and the situations that tend to bring up anxiety, conflict, or self-doubt. Together we explore how past experiences, family dynamics, and cultural expectations may be influencing the ways you respond to these moments. Through this process, we work toward building greater emotional awareness and developing ways of responding that feel more grounded, intentional, and aligned with your values. For many clients, therapy becomes a space where their experiences are understood in their full context — not just individually, but also culturally and relationally. My goal is to approach this work with humility, curiosity, and compassion, creating a space where your lived experiences are respected and meaningfully integrated into the therapeutic process.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

When we begin working together, we’ll start by understanding what has been weighing on you and what patterns may be contributing to the stress you’re experiencing. For some people, this might mean looking at the anxiety that shows up in school, work, or relationships. For others, it may involve exploring family expectations, cultural pressures, or the feeling of being pulled in different directions in life. Many clients are also trying to make sense of identity questions, relationship dynamics, or the responsibilities that come with parenting and family roles. In our sessions, we slow things down and look closely at the emotions and experiences that shape how you respond to these situations. Together we might explore what tends to trigger anxiety, the thoughts or expectations that keep you feeling stuck, or the patterns that show up repeatedly in relationships. Together we work on developing greater emotional awareness and practical ways of responding differently — whether that means learning how to regulate intense emotions, setting healthier boundaries, communicating more clearly with family members, or building confidence in your own decisions. Therapy is a collaborative process. My role is to help you better understand what you’re experiencing and support you in making changes that allow you to feel more grounded, more confident, and more connected in your life.
