Getting to know Kala Hutchinson

My name is Kala, and I am a clinical counselor and mental health therapist. I feel blessed to work with people and hope to navigate everyone's personal journey of healing. My history with addiction and mental health comes from both my close relationships and my own personal experiences. I am a Christian-Spiritualist and truly believe each person's life has purpose. We are all in this together, and I plan to work alongside each person on their individualized path toward recovery with the goal of lifelong health and wellness. I hold a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Cornerstone University Professional & Graduate Studies and a Certificate in Addiction Counseling from Bear River Health, which equip me to provide compassionate and informed care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a Master of Mental Health Counseling graduate at Cornerstone University. Currently, I have my LPC which is a license to practice professional counseling services and a CAADC, which is a certified alcohol and drug counselor. Coming from a Christian background and having my degree from a Christian university does not limit my ability to help people from all spiritual or non-spiritual walks of life. This background allows an opportunity for grace and acceptance. Through my experiences, I have worked in the private setting as well as an agency setting. In the private setting, the opportunities and experiences were with a wide range of individuals from children to adults. I was able to work alongside people struggling with developmental problems, depression, OCD, and more. In the agency setting, the opportunities and experiences were working in detox as well as residential and outpatient addiction treatment services. I have done counseling, case management duties, facilitated groups and helped to create curriculum for group material. This environment also allowed me time to work one-on-one in the counseling setting to help people suffering from addiction to find recovery with both substances and mental health disorders.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Counseling sessions are an opportunity for the counselor and individual to work on treatment goals and plans to reach those goals. Counseling always begins with an initial/ intake assessment/ interview. This gives the counselor an opportunity to get to know the individual in an interview-like format, asking several questions. This first appointment is 90 minutes in length. Individual appointments are generally 55 minutes in length. If for any reason the scheduled appointment must be rescheduled, it is essential for notification at least 24-hours in advance of the appointment time. Everyone has a right to privacy which is governed by legal and ethical guidelines. The information shared in counseling is not shared with anyone else unless there is expressed written permission. However, there are exceptions to confidentiality which include: Duty to Warn: This is required by law and is necessary in reporting when a person is a threat to harm themselves (suicidal intent) or to harm another (assault/murder/other criminal acts). Child Abuse: The Michigan law mandates the reporting of incidences or suspected incidences of child abuse, including but not limited to physical abuse, sexual abuse, unlawful sexual intercourse, neglect, and emotional or psychological abuse. Adult Persons Abuse: Michigan state law requires any incidences of “dependent adult” or adult persons physical abuse or neglect reported to a counselor are then reported to the appropriate Michigan authorities. Court Orders: At times, a court of law may order disclosure of confidential information. If required by subpoena, only necessary and relevant information is disclosed. Minors/Guardianship: Parents or legal guardians of non-emancipated minor clients have rights to access their records. Family & Couple Therapy: When family or couple therapy is performed, the individual is considered the family or couple unit. Therefore, it is not confidential from the other participating family members or partners.
