Getting to know Kamila Zapytowska

I have an extensive experience in treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationships, addictions and chronic health conditions such as cancer, alopecia, infertility, migraine headaches and psychosomatic conditions lacking a medical explanation.I enjoy working with people from diverse backgrounds, addressing aspects of assimilation, major life transitions and multicultural challenges. One of my main specialities is working with competitive athletes, performing artists and tv/film/media professionals. My background in performing arts and sports (including Broadway and Olympics) makes me additionally aware of various pressures that can hinder personal and professional growth. I am especially familiar with struggles of perfectionism, procrastination, self-image, performance anxiety, injuries and exploitation. I completed my postgraduate studies at the International Psychotherapy Institute in Washington, DC where I studied psychoanalytic psychotherapy. I am a certified Object Relations Theory teacher and the Affective Group leader. I have taught seminars on money in relationships, psychosomatic disorders, dreams and their significance, among other themes from the object relations perspective. My seminars were co-sponsored by the International Psychotherapy Institute, Washington DC, and the NJ Society for Clinical Social Work. I have masters degrees from the Hunter College of Social Work in New York and the Warsaw Academy of Physical Eduction in Poland where I studied sports psychology and coaching. I am a recipient of Jacob Goldfein Award for Creative and Scholarly Work for Body-centered Therapies and Healing Trauma.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is rooted in psychodynamic therapy, which means we'll explore how past experiences and unconscious patterns may be influencing your present-day challenges. We'll delve into your emotions, relationships, and life experiences to gain a deeper understanding of yourself. Alongside this exploration, I incorporate skill-building techniques, including developing coping strategies, improving communication skills, and cultivating self-awareness. This combined approach helps you not only understand the "why" behind your struggles, but also equips you with practical tools to navigate them more effectively and create lasting positive change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I provide a safe and supportive space where we can explore the root causes of your anxiety and self-criticism. Together, we'll develop practical strategies to manage your worries, build your confidence, and help you rediscover your passions.

Kamila is a great therapist. She is very knowledgeable in several areas. As a previous competitive athlete, she has been able to help me within that area. She helps me deeply reflect on my experiences so that I understand where my current thought processes come from so that I understand myself. She has helped me when I was not doing too well and continues to help me to this day. I have seen great improvement in myself.
I have been very fortunate to work with Kamila for past 4 years. She is calm, empathetic and professional. She has been there for me through so many ups and downs- supporting me at my lowest point during my fertility journey, helping my whole family deal with the anxiety during the peak of COVID time and most importantly helping me get out of my postpartum depression. There is no words to express my gratitude! Thank you so much for everything !
Kamila is a wonderful therapist. She listens deeply and encourages the patient to listen to their self deeply. That way, when conclusions are drawn or connections are made, they truly stick and feel like they come from within. I have noticed the deep change within myself over the last several years of seeing her.
