“I am thankful to have found a therapist like Karen. She is straight-forward and firm with boundaries, yet also authentic, compassionate and funny. She challenges me to reframe my thinking when necessary, but never judges or implies that my thoughts and feelings are not valid. My first year in recovery hasn't been an easy one, but I'm glad I had someone to help guide me along the way.”

Getting to know Karen Chuzmir

Do you find yourself feeling stuck or as if you are just going through the motions and simply existing? I can help guide you to participate more fully in life and reach your maximum potential. Together, we will work collaboratively to increase self-awareness, identify recurring patterns, and minimize maladaptive behaviors through coping skills and available resources. With insight, confidence, and tools in hand, you will be better equipped to navigate life’s challenges and stop getting in your own way. I am very collaborative, directive, and strengths-based in my work with clients. I am a licensed clinical social worker and credentialed alcoholism and substance abuse counselor with 7 years of experience. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from Fordham University. I work with adults, couples, and families to address life challenges related to mood and personality disorders, addiction and dependency issues, building positive relationships, and cultivating self-worth. My approach is eclectic, utilizing several modalities tailored to each client’s needs, including evidence-based practices when applicable. Ambivalence is common when facing life decisions or transitions. Using CBT, DBT, and motivational interviewing, I meet clients where they are and help each individual gauge their readiness for change. You’ve taken a huge step by seeking therapy—now let’s go on this journey together! I currently accept out-of-network clients and provide superbills for insurance reimbursement, which can cover a large portion of the cost. I also have several sliding scale slots available.

The most important factor in the success of therapy is the relationship with your therapist. Almost two years ago I interviewed six potential therapists and felt an immediate connection with Karen. She makes the patient/therapist relationship effortless and engaging, even when discussing uncomfortable topics. As an actor, I appreciate her previous experience in the entertainment industry, as she has an immediate understanding of the arts. Her CBT approach and warm manner while specializing in addictions, depression, and anxiety make her an excellent therapist.
